What is the expected weight loss for lightweights?

Hi guys. I'm really just curious about this and would like to hear your own personal stories about it.

I'm 23, F, 5'8" and am sitting around 240lbs right now. My BMI is under 40 but I weighed in at about 260lbs two years ago which is when I started the program that is giving me the surgery.

I was talking with my dietician the other day and she mentioned that I shouldn't expect to lose that much weight. Like she basically said my goal weight should be around 190-200lbs. I am not happy with that. I weighed 180lbs in high school and wasn't my goal weight then.

My main goal would be between 150-160, which I think is very realistic for my height. I don't plan on dropping the weight in a couple months or anything, but was wondering how others have dealt with this? I know that, as a "lightweight", most of the people who know about this (friends and family) all wonder why I am doing it. The reason being that I want to control my weight lifelong, and because I have PCOS which has sent my insulin levels through the roof. I want to be healthy and be able to maintain that health my whole life.

As lightweights, how much weight have you lost or do you plan to lose?

We are pretty much the same height.  When I first went in for consultation I was 271 and he put my goal around 197!!!  He said that is what the studies and statistics would put me at.  He said I could work harder and beat that or work less and not hit that.  So I work hard before surgery and got down to 247.  And then during the past 6 months I have worked hard and now weight 172.8.  I am not done and would love to weigh at least 160 or less.  My healthy weight is 167 so I want a little wiggle room.  I couldn't image being in the 150s.  I wonder why she doesn't expect you to loose that much.  Honestly anytime someone doubts me is when I show them what I am made of and I prove them wrong.  You can do 150!!!  Just follow the plan and exercise.  A lot of people say protein drinks make them sick so they don't drink them.  Well, I say it is not an option so you just have to find one you like.  Good luck.  You got this and you can do this.

Hi there. I'm 5'7" and started at 250-255lbs. I got down to 170lbs. But, rather than continue on, I self sabotage and gained back 35lbs. I'm back to 190-195lbs, and am on the pace back to 170lbs. The tool still works for me, as does the diet and exercise plan. Don't psych yourself out in advance. You can definitely get below 190lbs.

Good luck to you. Stick around, this board is great for support.

You didn't mention your type of surgery.  That does have some effect on expected loss of excess weight.  DS has the greatest chance of getting to a normal BMI followed by RNY then Sleeve.   I do think that more lightweights reach a normal BMI than heavy weights.  Our thought here is to not set a goal weight and keep on keeping on as low as you can.  I got to 111 which was way low for my body but have settled around 124 which is higher than I want. I'm working to get back around 120.  If you take advantage of the honeymoon and learn to eat right and realize that you are in this for life, you can get to a normal weight, or at least very close.

Whoops, sorry! I'm getting the VSG done. I'm glad to see everyone here kind of has their own goals in mind that they're trying to reach.

I'm going to take it in small chunks, but end goal is definitely around 150-160 or wherever I feel comfortable.

I started a little higher than you at BMI of 42.  My surgeons goal for me 162.  I hit it about at 6 months post op and have continued to lose.  Currently at 156, I set my personal goal at 146 which is BMI of 25 "normal range"  If I get lower I will let it happen, I just didn't want to set an unrealistic goal as I havent been below 150 since my 20s, I am 43.  Your age should be in your favor for the weight loss and the skin. :)

My doctor would not give me a "goal" weight but said I could start his maintenance plan when I reached 75% of excess weight lost. I reached that before my 6 mo visit. I reached my personal "goal" of 120 at just over 9 mo out. I plan to continue to work the program and let my weight go as low as it wants, so if I have bounce back I end up back here at the 120 range. I'm only 5'3" and I personally like how I looked at 105 year ago, but I'm much older now and have had 4 kids since I saw that weight last so I'm not holding my breath.

Not sure what surgery you are doing or have done, but i had the RNY. I expected to reach my "goal" and stopping was never a thought for me. I don't know why you couldn't reach yours as well.

Check out the VSG board - I posted the question of goal weight for women 5'7"-5'9" a few days ago.  Very interesting to see the responses.  I haven't had time yet to summarize them - but I will!  I also posted about my dr's 70% loss goal for me - which is 179.  I'm 5'8" and started at 256 5 months ago.  I'm now at 192.4 (very specific, I know)...I told him my goal was 165 and he told me I was optimistic....there's another post on the VSG board on that topic from just last night since it really annoyed me. My lowest adult weight was when I was 28 and about 168 - so 165 seemed like a nice goal.  I'm nos almost 35 and over 10 years older than you are.  You should have no problem dropping down to where you want to be and like the above said, your skin should be more forgiving!!

Good luck - happy to talk  more about this since it annoys and fascinates me;-)

I got to a normal BMI just past the 6 month mark. Lightweights tend to get to goal faster and more often IME. And also according to the few studies that looked at that sort of thing.
