Topic: I need help! Advice Please!!

Hi All,

I am new to the group. This is my first post. I'm about 80% certain I will be going through with VSG this summer. But i won't do it unless i'm 100% in. I need your thoughts.

I'm a 40 yo man, 6'1, 293lbs at my highest. I am a formerly thin college athlete who never felt comfortable in his newfound fatness but also i've never been able to shed pounds without picking up twice as many as i lost.

Alas I am at forty and I have major health concerns such as HBP, prediabetes, sleep apnea, depression, high holesterol, tendonitis, etc etc etc. I know from my dad who is 59 that if i follow him and cant shake the weight, these conditions will end up taking away my health. He's a shell of the man he used to be.

I have to nip this in the bud now and i've proven countless times before that i cannot do it myself. after months of research I went in for my first consult in December and spent the last month seeing all types of specialists. In this time, I've alrady lost 5 pounds. If it continues i'll be on track for a 30 pound loss by surgery date this summer. If i lose 30 before surgery i'll only have another 80 to lose. Right now my BMI is about 38.

I'm starting to think i'm too light to make such a permanent and drastic move. Did anyone here face this decision? Is VSG worth it to lose 80 pounds?

I'm afraid to not do it and end up not able to lose on my own AGAIN. but i'm afraid i will lose too much if i do.

Any thoughts?

Nice to see you posting!!!! I'm excited that you are determined to get back on track! If you get back to eating proteins and leaving the carbs behind you might be surprised to see the scales move at a quick pace. Sometimes our body's need a rest and then a jump start.

I have wrinkles too but at 64 they don't bother me that much. I'd love a boob reconstruction more than anything. I wish I had a rich family member or friend who would volunteer to pay for it....LOL.

I've been having problems with my short term memory. It's not only embarrassing but even more than that is the frustration I've been having at work and just talking with friends/family. My girls brought it to my attention right after we got back from our cruise and our trip to NY city. They waited a week or so because they thought I was just exhausted but it has gradually gotten worse. I really struggle at work so I've been carrying a pen and paper around with me but sometimes I even forget to write it down or I'll think I will remember long enough to get to my desk to write it down. GUESS WHAT....I forget things with in seconds and just walking 10 steps away.

I went to my PCP a few weeks ago and yesterday I went to a Neurologist. He sent me paperwork to fill out and bring back and one of the forms I had to sign was that I acknowledged that if he seen fit he could take my driver license away. How scary is that to you??? At 64 I was terrified!!! Guess what....I forgot to take the paper with me to the office!!! I got a 10+ minute lecture about not bringing it in and the reasons why he might take my license away. I was shaking by the time he was done. Fortunately my DD went with me and she assured him that I was a safe driver and she also told him she has seen improvements in my memory....(I think she lied).

As I mentioned on Menus and Miles yesterday my B12 levels have dropped from 1100 down to the 300's. He feels pretty sure that it's my low levels that are causing the problem although he does want to have an MRI of my brain done. I'm going to have my PCP schedule my MRI because I don't want to be fearful of the results and losing my license.

I text Major Mom this morning and got some advice about my B-12. I honestly thought I was absorbing enough at 9 years out that I didn't need to take my vitamins on a regular basis......how DUMB was that!!! EXTREMELY DUMB!!! I would love to meet her sometime. She has been my go to for almost 10 years!!

I hope you all take your vitamins and supplements religiously!!!

WARNING TO SELF AND TO ANYONE WHO WILL LISTEN!!! AVOID 'BAD' CARBS AT ALL COSTS!!! THEY ARE ADDICTING!! THEY WILL SLOW DOWN YOUR WEIGHT LOSS DURING THE LOSING STAGE (and you won't even notice)!! THEY WILL MAKE THE SCALE GO UP AFTER THE HONEYMOON PERIOD IS OVER.

Success in Maintenance starts with GOOD CHOICES during the Honeymoon Period.

Good morning,

It has been a while since I've been on here. I am doing well. How y'all doin? ;)

I had surgery 14 months ago. Recovery went well. My goal weight is still 130 - 135lbs. My low weight was 147 lb****ting 147 lbs was sooo Exciting!! I have experienced some weight gain. Now I'm up to weighing 160.

The weight gain has had me a little concerned. I am hoping that I can lose it. Any suggestions?

I went back to some of my old habits. I enjoyed eating carbs, off-and-on, for a while. It's time to go back to eating healthier. I'll be back on track starting today. :)

The over-all Saggy skin can be a real bummer at times... Fortunately, I can cover up the majority of it with my clothes. I finally like the way I look in my clothes. I am Still getting use to being at a healthy weight.

My "new" face is what's bothering me. My face didn't sag much or have wrinkles before the surgery. I am adjusting to the "new" me. I'm thinking about getting a mini facelift.

Happy to say that My hair loss has stopped for the most part. I have plenty of new growth which is very Exciting :) I hope to have thick hair once again.

Over all, I am pleased with my my surgery results. No regrets. Happy Days!!!

Good morning :)

I've been stalled so far this past week with my weight. I hit my lowest number ever last week and then went up 2lbs and can seem to budge. I hoping to see some movement soon. I'm at 26.5 BMI and would really like to get into the normal range (25 or less). At less than 8 months post-op I really don't want to be done losing.

I have a super busy day ahead with much of it on the road, so I hoping to be super prepared with my food to keep me in check.

B- Chocolate/Peanut butter protein powder with unsweetened Almond milk and 1/2 banana

S- Cheese string and kielbasa

L- Chicken Skewer

S- plum and Kielbasa

D- leftover chicken

S- lite & fit yogurt

Afternoon LWs!!! I went to a neurologist today because I've been having trouble with my Memory. My PCP did my blood work in December and told me my B12 was good. Stupid me I didn't ask him what the numbers were. The Nero Dr. looked them up and my B12 had dropped for 1100 down to the 300's. I thought I could trust my PCP but apparently not! Going straight to the Drug store after work to stock up on my vitamins!!
