Thanks for the updates! I'm really glad all is going according to plan. No liquids until tomorrow morning sounds tough, but I'm sure the doctors know best (in this instance). [Alan updates me that the first "liquid" must be barium for an X-ray, to see if there are any leaks.] Am thinking of Katherine, and wishing her all the best! [Spoke w/ Alan this morning (7:40am PST), surgery went well, and Katherine will soon be X-rayed.] Love, Dale

Alan's third update: So far, so good! Surgery lasted between 3-1/2 and 4 hours, very fast for Katherine's BMI. It was all done laparscopically, no major incision. Surgery ended a few minutes before 1, she went to recovery, and was wheeled into her room at 2:30. She was groggy, but recognized me right away. Gene and Monica stopped in on their way through town and she was very happy to see them. The pain was rough at first, but within an hour the nurses had it under control. She is quite alert considering the anesthesia and morphine. She is very thirsty, but only gets glycerine swabs until the new pouch passes its "leak test" tomorrow (sometime in the morning). She took her first walk about 7:30 this evening. The nurse said she didn't even have to go as far as the door, but she was very determined and made it clear down to the nurses station and back! She has also been religious about doing her inspirational respirometer every hour. Overall she is doing very well, the nurses are great (special protocols for gastric bypass patients), and Dr. Dally and Dr. Cagle are completely satisfied with the procedure. I do have to say, though, that I am very glad I am spending the first day next to her, and able to keep tabs on all the stuff they are doing; patients have enough to do just taking care of themselves! --Alan

Alan again! Katherine is out of surgery, into recovery; everything is fine, the surgery went as planned. I will be able to see her in 1 - 2 hours. I don't know much more yet; Dr. Dally and I have not been connecting! He thought he would come update me about 11:00, so I got back to the waiting room about 10:15. Meanwhile, the volunteer receptionist for the waiting area didn't show up for the morning shift, and finally they brought in the afternoon person at 12, and she was flustered by the backlog of the waiting room. By 12:50 I was starving (had a scone and coffee at 7:30) so I was gone for 12 minutes, and that's when Dr. Dally came out. Oh well, I will see him later, and I'm looking forward to seeing Katherine soon!

Alan here! We got to the hospital about 5:45 and checked in. They took us to short-term care at 6, and Nancy got Katherine ready for pre-op (IV, valium, pepcid, checked paper work). They took her to pre-op about 8:15. Dr. Dally checked with me about 8:30, said the surgery would start at about 9:30, and he would tell me how it was going about halfway through, about 11 or so. Katherine was a tiny bit nervous (gee, imagine that!) but the valium helped, and she was in great spirits overall. TTYL
