Maria, I forgot to mention one other thing. You are right: we do not know the long term effects of this surgery. But we DO know the long term effects of obesity....

Maria, like you I am seriously bothered by the fact that there is no long term data. I know that the RNY has been done for many, many years yet no-one seems to have long-term data. Why is that? I have heard that when people do really well, they have no need to contact their doctor anymore, and as such old-timers are hard to find. My own surgeon did a long term study and contacted over 3000 patients. Only the ones within 1 or 2 years of surgery seemed to respond. Did the others not respond because they hated what it had done to them, or because they are content and feel no need to bring up the fact that they had WLS. I have also heard some disturbing rumors that the reason old-timers are hard to come by is because they have passed away. This surgery used to be performed on patients who had cancer of the digestive tract, and their life expectancy was between 15 and 30 years after this procedure (not because of the cancer, but because of the surgery). These patients were easier to track down because they had to continue seeing a doctor to see if their cancer had returned. Truth is, no-one knows what is fact and what is fiction. You cannot compare patients with cancer with patients who have this same procedure for weight loss. I think for this very reason children should not have this surgery, and nor should anyone else until they are very comfortable with the possible long term risks. I have known several people who had this surgery over 20 years ago, and they seem to be doing just fine. Some gained their weight back (older procedure), some have maintained. None have regretted the surgery. Maybe all we can do is pray about it, sincerely and with an open heart, and be ready for an answer we may or may not like.

Maria, here are my words of wisdom....I would rather live 10 years in the best shape of my life and happy than another minute fat (dieing inside)...Also, if I have vitamin deficinacies in 10 yrs or problems, I have faith in the medical community. Think of all the things that we have now that 10 years ago weren't even thought of. Good luckm go with your gut. Heather (open rny 8/15, 305/214/150)
