2 weeks and a day out

Jan 01, 2011

Two weeks ago, I was in the hospital, a day from having RNY gastric bypass.  I am on week 2, the smooth consistency diet now, and I am feeling ready to move on to the 3rd week, where I can add meat.  Oh, and I really want a salad, but I will wait until next weekend before giving raw spinach leaves a try (I want to be home when I try that in case my pouch does not agree).  I am going to try some tuna for my first meat, so I really hope it goes down well and stays put.

I have been doing REALLY well, healing and pain wise.  I hit a little bump (hopefully it's just a little bump) yesterday.  I woke up really early, and I felt a little sore on my left side, so I decided to take some of my pain meds (liquid hydrocodone).  I didn't think that I needed to really eat something first b/c when I was taking it every 4 hours just days before, I had no problems.  Well, about a few minutes later, I was nauseated and throwing it back up.  I took some phenergen (spelling?) and went to sleep for a few hours.  I expected to wake up feeling better, but I think the throwing up strained my stomach muscles a little too much b/c for the past few days I keep getting these twangs and pangs if I move the wrong way.  Lesson learned - no pain meds w/o at least a cracker or something (or none at all - I'd rather deal with soreness than these pangs and twangs!)  I am eating just fine and everything is staying down, so I'm not too worried.  I'm sure it will feel better in a day or so.

I am down somewhere between 25 and 30 lbs.  I'm not totally sure b/c our scale really sucks.  But good news!  I can now fit into a pair of jeans easily that I had to lay down on the bed to fasten a month ago! :)  I'm trying to focus more on how I feel and how things are fitting rather than focus on the pounds.

My main food has been drinking protein shakes (Body Fortress from Walmart), cottage cheese, yogurt, crackers and peanut butter, and some canned fruit in water, pear juice, or in it's own juice.  I learned that, since I can't drink 30 minutes after a meal, if I end my meal with a couple pieces of fruit, I don't feel so thirsty and that 30 minutes doesn't seem so long.

My most favorite thing to eat since surgery are sugar free popsicles and peaches!  Mmmmmmm...  I hope I will enjoy meat so I can get some new flavors and textures b/c I'm getting tired of smooth consistency week.  I am excited about learning new recipes and trying new foods that are low fat and sugar free.  I haven't 'dumped' yet, and I hope I can stay away from it.

I'm really excited about this journey.  :)
