Coming up on 11 months....

Nov 05, 2013

I'm coming up on 11 months. I've been pretty much stalled for the last 6 weeks. Work has been stressful. I'm 7.4 pounds from my goal weight. Still determined to get there, no matter if it takes me another 11 months! I feel absolutely WONDERFUL. I never guessed I would be in a size 8 pants again. Dr. Teel at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, OH rocks! He was very proud of himself when he saw my 2 tiny scars on my stomach. They are barely even visable. I couldn't help but laugh at him. He is a great surgeon and I am SO happy I chose him. I don't think I could have done better in this area of our country. If anyone in Ohio or Indiana is looking for a great surgeon, I HIGHLY recommend him.

I know not everyone has had the great experience I've had. I really had no problems at all and really no pain after the recovery room to speak of. I woke up in recovery in pain. They gave me morphine and back out I went, woke up, still in pain and they gave me more morphine and back out I went. Woke up the third time and as they say, third time's a charm. The pain was in my shoulder so I assume it was the gas they fill your stomach cavity with. I was in my room about 4 hours after surgery, lacing up my tennis shoes for a walk down the hallway. I went home the next day in order to attend my father in law's funeral. I took it easy at home for a week and tried to get in my fluids and protein, which was difficult. I walked as much as I could because I read where it helped to get rid of the gas. I was tired for a couple of days but nothing I couldn't handle. I was off the pain medication within a week. Could have gone off almost right away but it helped me sleep so I could heal. All in all, if I had to do it again, I would do it in a heartbeat.

I think everyone deals with pain differently and I think not all surgeons have the same skill levels. My advice to anyone beginning this process is; look for an experienced surgeon. Follow the pre-surgery diet to a T, so you give the surgeon the best view they can get. Do everything they tell you and prepare your home for when it's over. Make sure you have support at home and have your head ready to do exactly what you've been taught to do after surgery. If you are going to go this far to lose the weight, do it right. This is a tool and NOT a permanent fix without work on your part. Go in with your eyes wide open and change your life. If you go back to the way you were before, your body will go back to the way it was before. There is no miracle here, just a great start on the road to success.

I love my new look and the way I feel. I didn't even know how bad I felt before I took this step. Good luck to everyone who takes this step and I pray you find your own happiness on your journey.

What a ride it's been!

Jun 01, 2013

Having the sleeve is the BEST thing I ever did for me. I have to be careful and track daily as I'm healed at 5 and a half months out and can really eat whatever I choose. I'm down to 174.8 pounds, down 68.6 pounds from my highest weight (before the pre-surgery diet) of 244. My surgeons goal is 150 pounds but my personal goal is 140 pounds.

I feel amazing. I'm in a size 12. I had to buy a new belt. I can walk and breathe easier. I walked the other day for slightly over an hour and even sweated! People are telling me I look good. Life is good.

I haven't had much in the way of problems. Right away after surgery, I felt great. I don't know if it was mental or real but as soon as I was fully awake in the hospital, I felt positive and just plain good. I had moments when I first ate real food when I ate a little too much food protein and threw up a little. I know my stopping point well now.

I am tracking on Myfitnesspal daily and probably will for life. That's alright with me.

I was scared of surgery before I went to have it and put it off for 2 months because my father had problems with his gastric bypass. He had a leak, got sepsis and luckily lived through it. I knew I had to do something about my weight and I'm so glad I got over my fear.

SIZE 14!

Apr 19, 2013

I began my weight loss journey as a size 20. A very tight size 20 so I was probably really a size 22. I actually went shopping Wednesday night and tried on and bought a size 14! I know, that's not thin but a size 14! There were a lot of times, I never thought I'd see that size again.

I am 4 months out and I find myself hungry at times now so the real work begins. I am determined to keep up the weight loss. I feel like I can do this. I told my surgeon before the surgery, I knew this surgery was a tool to get me going and it got me going. 4 months and 60 pounds down have given me a new outlook. I have 43.4 pounds to go instead of 104.4. I CAN DO THIS!!!

Surgery completed

Dec 21, 2012

Today is December 21st. I am 3 days out of surgery. I feel pretty good but have a bit of minimal pain at the incisions. I can handle just using muscle relaxers and tylenol though. I weighed today. Only down a pound but as my daughter reminded me, they did give me 3 large bags of fluid and my stomach (inside) is still swelled. I have stayed away from work pretty much. We wrapped the last of the presents today. Yeah! I have a bit of trouble getting in all my liquids but I am hopefully getting enough not to dehydrate.
