One Year Anniversary

Mar 03, 2009

Today is my one year anniversary!  And I also saw my surgeon today - sheer coincidence that my appt. fell on the same day.  My total weight loss so far is 129.5 pounds.  That darn half pound - I would have liked to hit the 130 lb. mark.  That puts my current weight at 134.5 pounds, so only 4.5 lbs. to my goal.  Once the weather warms up and I start walking again I think those last few pounds will come off.

I am very happy that I lost almost 130 lbs. in a year.  I didn't think I would be so successful.  But it's not easy and I watch everything I put in my mouth.  I wonder if I will ever be able to not "diet".

Nine Month Update

Dec 11, 2008

DECEMBER 9, 2008
I'm down 116 pounds in nine months - unbelievable!  Another 18 pounds to lose until I am at my goal of 130.  Doctor says my goal should be 143, but according to the height/weight charts, I should be in the 130's.

My greatest hope is that I will be able to continue to eat the way I am now - healthy, natural foods.  I don't want to go back to processed, high fat, high sugar foods.  I'm afraid if I start trying foods like that again, I will start craving them.  With Christmas coming and all the goodies that will be tempting me, I hope I have the willpower to avoid them!

6 Month Update

SEPT. 14, 2008
I had my six month check-up with the surgeon on Tuesday and I have lost 95 pounds!  I'm thrilled to be under 170 lbs.  The doctor figures I've lost 78% of my excess weight, so I should taper off and stop losing.  But I want to get to my goal weight of 130 lbs.  He thinks that is too thin.  I go back to see him in December and would love to be at goal, but that may be wishful thinking.

Not only am I losing weight, but I'm losing my hair.  The hair on top of my head is so thin you can see my scalp.  I've lightened the color of my hair so it's not so noticeable, but I'm really bummed.  Doc says to increase protein (easier said than done).

I've adopted a new attitude towards the food that I eat.  I only want to eat natural, unprocessed foods.  After reading the book "In Defense of Food", I steer clear of all processsed foods.  So far it's been working good for me.  My garden has been providing 70% of my food.  I only need to add fruit and legumes.  Needless to say, there's no room for meat.

I still need to increase my exercising.  I try to walk every day, but DH wants to come along and then complains that I'm walking too fast.  Maybe I need to take 2 walks per day:  a stroll with hubby and then a serious cardio walk by myself.

Over 1/2 of my excess weight is gone!

JULY 5, 2008
I can't believe it's been a month since I posted.  Guess I've been busy.  One week ago I hosted a baby shower for my step-daughter, Jessie.  We had 52 guests and she received almost everything she registered for.  All in all, the baby shower was a great success.

Yesterday (4th of July) we invited my side of the family over for a BBQ and pool party.  Hubby made baby back ribs, marinated chicken breasts, and hamburgers on the grill.  I ate about 1/4 of a chicken breast and a spoonful of cold bean salad that I made with Splenda.

Eating is still a hassle, even after 4 months.  But I can't complain about the results.  WOO HOO!!  I'm down 68 pounds!  I only have 66 lbs. to lose to get to my goal weight of 130 lbs.   I am so excited.

In 2 weeks our subdivision is having a huge neighborhood garage sale, hopefully I can sell all my plus size clothes and make some money to buy smaller sizes.

Three Month Update

MAY 28, 2008
I can hardly believe that 3 months have passed since my surgery.  I saw Dr. Schneider yesterday for my check-up and found that I have lost 56 pounds!  Yeah!!  I also got to talk to my favorite nutritionist, Dawn.  She and the doctor still have concerns that I'm not getting enough protein.  I'm going to try harder, but it won't be easy.

Last night I tried to eat a small crab cake - 2 tiny forkfuls and I was done.  I tried to eat some more of the crab today for lunch and threw it all up.  So I can add crab cakes to my ever-growing list of things I can't tolerate.

I went for jury duty this morning and was selected to sit on a jury for a capital murder trial.  Testimony begins tomorrow and will last until next week.  My big challenge is to find some food to take with me for lunch and also to find some nice clothes to wear that fit.  It seems like I gave all my good clothes in smaller sizes to the Goodwill.  Maybe I should go to the Goodwill outlet and buy them back.

Two Months Out

APRIL 29, 2008
Today was my eight week check-up with Dr. Schneider and I'm happy to say that I've lost 43 pounds!  We discussed my aversion to eating and he asked that I add one snack during the day to increase my protein.  He also told me I could begin adding fresh fruit and veggies as tolerated.  The dietician said I should wait until 12 weeks, but I'm going with what the doctor says.

I'm still having problems getting food down.  Two days ago I tried eating an egg again (this time hard-boiled and mashed up into egg salad) and I threw it up.  So that makes three times I've been sick on eggs - no more eggs for me.

Now I have to focus on establishing a regular exercise schedule.  I'm sure that will help my weight loss.  I just haven't been strict enough with myself.

But I'm very happy with the WLS results so far!

People are beginning to notice

APRIL 10, 2008
We had our Relay for Life fundraising lunch today and I saw many of my old co-workers.  Some of them knew I had WLS, but others were asking me if I had changed my hair style because they knew something was different.  Apparently my weight loss is beginning to show.  It was kinda funny talking to people and they just looked at me trying to figure out what had changed.  One lady said I looked 10 years younger, now THAT was a compliment!

Wish my weight loss was an April Fool's joke

Saw Dr. Schneider and nutritionist today.  I only lost 7 1/2 lbs. in 2 weeks.  I'm disappointed.  After the big weight loss for the first 2 weeks I was hoping for at least 10 lbs.  But I have to keep things in perspective, 29 lbs. in one month is pretty good.  I couldn't have done that on Weight Watchers.

Dr. Schneider wants to have a scope put down my throat to check for a stricture, but I was able to stall for another couple of days.  If things don't get better by Friday, I have to call his office and set it up.

Today I saw a new dietician/nutritionist.  She's new at the center and wasn't very helpful.  She kept telling me to eat chicken even after I told her I don't eat meat.  I didn't get anything out of our session today.

My next weigh-in at the center is April 29th.  Hopefully I will have a good weight loss by then, especially if I start to exercise.

Food is my enemy!

MARCH 26, 2008
I'm not having much luck with the soft food phase.  I started with soft foods on Monday and haven't had a decent meal yet.  My protein intake is down from last week and I feel like crap - no energy, no enthusiasm.  Tonight I was really looking forward to a nice piece of Orange Roughy, thought it was a good choice, full of protein, no fat.  Two bites into it and I was done.  The food was not going to go down, so I spent the next 15 minutes trying not to vomit.  Lovely.

Mike bought me a case of Slim Fast Low Carb pre-mixed shakes today - YUCK!  Sickeningly sweet.  Now what am I going to do with the remaining 14 cans?  Tomorrow we go to Trader Joe's to scope out some other protein options.  If it was up to me, I would just live on water.

Easter Sunday's huge feast was not a temptation at all.  Not even all the candy.  I was content to have my 1/2 cup of cottage cheese.  It's amazing to me that I have no interest in food whatsoever.

Let's hope tomorrow is a better day!

It was worth it

MARCH 19, 2008
Went for my two week check-up with the surgeon yesterday and I can't believe that I've lost 21 1/2 pounds.  That was the revelation I needed.  I have been complaining the last few days that I should never have had the surgery.  Many days I don't feel good, I'm tired of watching the clock all day to determine when it's time to eat and drink, and I miss cooking.  But to hear that I've lost that much weight in so short a time has given me new motivation to adapt to this new lifestyle.

I was so looking forward to pureed food, but it hasn't been that rewarding.  Monday (my first day of eating regular food) I only took in 19 g. of protein.  So I am resigned to adding protein shakes to my daily menu.  I tried eating some egg on Tuesday, but that was a mistake.  It wouldn't pass into my pouch; and although I kept myself from vomiting, it felt like it was stuck in my chest for the rest of the day.

So, at 2 weeks out I'm pretty pleased with the results, even though it's been a hard road to travel.
