Hi I'm Dave.

Dec 27, 2008

Just thought I would introduce myself.

I am Dave. I am a 39 year old divorced dad. I am a single father of my son who is 14. I also have 2 girls who live with my ex-wife.

I am a retired garbageman. I worked for 13 years as a Teamster in the NW Chicago suburbs until I got hurt on the job (shoulder) so I took an early pension.

Now I am a full time student at NIU. I have a degree in Nursing and am working on a teaching certificate in special education, math, history, and sciences. Alot of my nursing classes went right into my teaching classes as far as biology, chemistry, and math classes. I like to consider myself a pretty smart guy. I maintain a 4.0 GPA in all my classes and am a member of a couple national honor societies.

I also drive a charter bus to pay the bills. I do a lot of work for the local schools taking kids to sports and academic competitions. I also take groups of drunk college kids out to parties.

When you go from throwing 18-20 tons of garbage a day to sitting on your butt all day in a bus or in a classroom you gain weight. I like to eat and eat a lot. When I was a garbageman I would hit the buffet everyday for lunch. I gained about 150 lbs since I retired from garbage work. I was overweight before then.

I started to look into a gastric bypass when I started to get close to 500lbs.

I got my RY on December 10, 2008. I weighed in at 483lbs on my surgery day. I got an open procedure because my MD said I was too big for a closed (LAP) procedure.

I am just over 2 weeks out and I don't know how much I have lost, but I am comfortably in clothes that didn't fit before the surgery. I believe I have lost 20-25lbs so far, but thats just a guess.

I am wanting to get down to 275-300 lbs because I am 6'5" tall.

I plan on re-joining the YMCA as soon as I feel good enough to get out.  I like to ride bikes. I just bought a new "fat guy" Specialized mountian bike last summer. I am looking forward to riding it this coming summer. Maybe with a couple less pounds I can ride more then 20 minutes at a ride.

I feel a little sick about all the time. I am not eating enough protein, but I feel a little better every day.

I am happy I got the surgery. I am scared about the future, but I am sure I will feel better in time.

I will post more when things change.

Dave
