Welcome to my OH page.
I have been overweight my entire life. I weighed 10 pounds, 8 ounces when I was born! I don't ever really remember feeling thin. I have always been big for my age. Now, at 33 years old, I am ready to do something about it. I have been researching WLS for about 2 years now. I am a self pay patient so I have gotten the chance to be really picky when it comes to surgeons. I have chosen Dr. Mark Pleatman to perform my surgery. I was set to get the RNY but have since changed to the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG). I feel it is safer for me. I have many co-morbidities- diabetes (insulin and pills), high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and thyroid.
The moment I decided I had to do something was July of 2007. I still feel like it all started as an allergic reaction- but I ended up with sky high blood sugar and ended up passing out and falling off my sister's bed. They never really did figure out what happened- but I was in the hospital for about a week from this. They said that if my best friend hadn't been there I might have not made it. She had to call 911. It was a terrible feeling- I couldn't breathe and I kept passing back out and then coming to. Anyway, I ended up on insulin after that. Come to find out, from the fall, I now have back and knee problems.
I really have always been a pretty confident person with great self esteem but when the back problems started I started really noticing how much weight I was carrying around. I love to travel and I could hardly do that anymore. Anything I do is a struggle lately. I have reached the breaking point and have decided to take a giant step to save my life and my sanity. Wish me luck!
