I am new to OH.  After struggling for many years, I have decided to examine surgery as an option to help me lose weight.  I don't know yet if it is the route I will go, but I think the time has come to really look into it and not say "not me!"

I have always struggled with my weight and in 2000, after dealing with fertility issues, was diagnosed with PCOS and IR.  In 2002, My son was conceived at my highest weight ever (at the time) with the help of metformin and other medical intervention.  During that pregnancy I actually lost 30 lbs and was down 50 lbs total at my 2 week post delivery check up.  A lot of people are shocked when I tell them that!  8 months after he was born, I was back up to my pre-prego weight and started WW.  I lost 33 lbs in 4 months when I became pregnant again with only the help of metformin.  While my pregnancy weight gain was minimal, I quickly gained it all back after my pregnancy.  I also experienced Gestational Diabetes during both pregnancies, although I never needed insulin.

I have struggled for the past two years on WW and trying to get back into the swing of weight loss, but have not been successful.  My current PCP and I have gone back and forth on the merits of metformin for women with PCOS and IR and while I have her on the band wagon right now, I dont know if it is really helping.  And then in 2007 I was diagnosed with high blood pressure, something I never had any issues with previously, even during pregnancy.  My PCP also had me try a “weight loss” drug that was suppose to suppress appetite.  With the combination of the cost of it and not remembering to take it, I don’t think I gave it a fair shot.  But I also don’t think it is the right choice for me.

So here I am researching my options.  I am in the Grand Rapids area and right now Dr. Foote at MMPC is my top choice for doctor.  My husband and I went to the seminar on March 15 at MMPC.  I am considering both the Lap and the VSG surgeries, but I will wait and see what Dr. Foote and MMPC have to say.  I see my PCP on March 19 so I can tell her what I am considering and hopefully get her on board about it.  For my insurance, I need her support and a referral.

03/19/08- My PCP has given me a referral!!

03/31/08- The referral was approved by my insurance company.

4/01/08 -  Today I called and made my first four appointments!  I have my history/physical & first psych eval on 4/15.  My first appt with the surgeon (Dr. Foote) and the 2nd psych eval is on 4/28.

I am very anxious for all of them!!!  For those of you that have used MMPC, any thoughts on what I should expect at any of the appointments?  I am thinking my husband will go with me to the history/physical and appt with Dr. Foote.  The woman I scheduled my appt’s with said he could go to the psych evals as well, but I don’t know if I want him to go with me to those as well.  I wouldn’t mind if he was there, but I am not sure if he can get a half day off for the appointments since they are back to back.
