I've been fat ever since I started junior high. Being the smartest one in class meant I had few friends, and being a latch-key kid in a neighborhood with no other children meant that I didn't see what friends I had very often. And they were geeks & nerds as well. So, our activities often revolved around video games, movies and other non-active activities. Got heavier through high school and almost wasn't able to get into the Army because I was too fat.
I did get fit and thin while serving. But, hurt my knee toward the end of my last tour and reinjured it after I got out. So, continuing my exercise wasn't really an option for many years. By that time, I had fallen back into a relatively sedentary lifestyle and started on my way to where I am now.
Now at almost 50, my wife and I have experienced gaining a good lifestyle financially, but we are both obese and tired of it.
Tired of being the "big guy". Tired of not fitting into a restaurant booth or an airplane seat without an extender or many cars. Tired of having to pay extra for "big" clothing which is rarely very stylish...unless I pay A LOT more than those of 'normal' size. Tired of the pain of lower leg swelling, back aches, sleep apnea.
I want to be able to go where I want without worrying if I can fit through turnstyles or if I am going to break a ladder or fall through a chair. I want a good night's sleep. I want to stop feeling tired all the time.
I want a change.
So, my wife and I have finally gotten insurance that will cover WLS. And we have begun the process of getting approved.
Insurance requires us to go through a 6-month physician-monitored diet/exercise program before they will approve us. We are excited about the change, but this hoop is causing a delay that we just weren't looking at when we began. We will get through it together.
We will succeed.
