My trip to Israel proved that eating healthy and staying active throughout the day is the best combination for weight loss.  Although it is not realistic to be on vacation forever, increased walking on a regular basis is definitely something we can all do.  I had been walking 3-5 days a week prior to my trip so I'd be in shape for all the walking I thought I'd be doing.  Once I got to Israel, we did a lot of walking everyday.  I was easily able to handle the walking, in fact I felt great over there (we were below sea level a lot of the time, so there was more oxygen).  Still, I can't ever remember doing that much walking everyday for so many days in a row.  It reminded me of college when I walked everywhere I wanted to go.  I never gained weight then either.  So if you need to recharge your metabolism, eat healthy meals and get out there and walk every chance you get.  It does not have to be long marathon sessions, or even an intense pace.  Just walk everywhere you can, as often as you can.  You could even try short walks around the block several times a day for a change.  I hope this gives you some practical ideas for the upcoming holiday season.  Weight gain is not inevitable.  Every day I was in Israel, I even had a couple of bites of dessert after I had eaten a healthy supper, and I still came home 7 pounds lighter.  Just keep your activity level high.  Good Luck, and God Bless you this wonderful Christmas Season!

November 2008

Nov 06, 2008

Well, it looks like the days of our "Indian Summer" are over and our Fall is starting to look like winter.  We are experiencing cold winds, rain, and snow today.  This Summer I have been spending a lot of effort getting in shape for long distance, sustained walking.  I will be going to Israel with my sister later this month.  We'll be there for 10 days with a tour group.  I am getting sooooo excited!!!
I'm wishing each of you a Happy Thanksgiving, a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year.

I am so excited!  I have been at my goal weight for the last month.
Our support group has begun a walking program (it started in May), but so far, the constant thunder storms have made my routine somewhat erratic.  I'm really motivated to get into better shape because I will be going to Israel with my sister in November.  We will be doing a lot of walking on the various tours each day, so I want to be able to enjoy that without being worn out or sore.  I hope you all have a great Summer!

April Snows???

Apr 14, 2008

If April showers bring May flowers, what does April snow bring??  It is finally warming up again, so maybe we can begin to enjoy Spring.
I've been busy putting together a walking program for my support group.  I will be going to Israel in November and there will be a lot of walking.  I want to be in good shape so that I can enjoy the tour without being totally exhausted.  If you want more details about the walking project, go to my Group site called "Healthy Life Journey" and check it out.
I haven't heard from some of you in a while.  Drop me a note and tell me what you're up to.  God Bless!

Look for Informational Features on My Message Board

Apr 14, 2008

So far, I have written two Feature Articles for this Group Site.  I have stored them on the Discussion Board, so check them out.  One topic is about general exercise, and the other is about a walking program.
I will write articles on different subjects in the future, so check in once in a while.

A Little About Me

Mar 05, 2008

I had Lap-Band surgery a little over 3 years ago.  I've lost a total of 104 pounds.  I'm very close to my goal weight, and if I never lost any more, I'd be ok with that (as long as I keep off what I've lost).
I'm the WLS Support Group Leader for our area (very rural South Western Nebraska).  So far, all of our members have had the Lap-band surgery.  We have 16 members who have already had the surgery in our group, which is a lot, if you consider that the population of Imperial is less than 2,000 people.
We've had two people who have had to have their gall bladders removed after WLS.  We've had 2 people who had an infection of their portals and had to have them removed.  They were replaced after the infection was fully treated, and really have not had too much trouble with weight regain.
We've only had one person who had a band errosion.  It took a full year to figure out what was going on with her (several doctors and several misdiagnosis later).  They have removed the entire Band and portal system.  If there is proper healing, they'll consider putting the band back on.  We're all praying for the best.  This member has come so far (over about 4 years).
Let us know if you are struggling with anything, and I'll relay it to our group to see if we can give you any good encouragement or advice about what has worked for us.

Happy St. Patrick's Day and Have a Blessed Easter!

Mar 05, 2008

March 3, 2008:  Today my doctor had to take .2 cc's of fluid out of my portal (that's the first time I've had that happen).  I guess that means that my band is as "full" as it can get without having problems.  I was having severe acid reflux after each meal and also at night.  I was taking a daily antacid, as well as a sublingual antacid as needed (which was once or twice a day).  I do have a hiatal hernia, so if this does not help, he'll have to go in and scope me to see if a repair needs to be done.  I'm pretty hopeful though, because before the last fill, I was having some problems, but they were manageable.  I lost another pound, even though my swallowing problems were causing me to eat more "soft" foods and fewer hardy meats.

Merry Christmas!
I hope everyone is able to make wonderful memories this Christmas with family and friends.
I have an added incentive to "be Good" this year.  I just reached the 100 pound mark for weight loss and I don't want to mess that up!

Happy ThanksGiving!

Things are beginning to get back to "normal".  I spent last week cleaning out the garage.  It was a lot of work, but it feels GREAT to have it finished.
I hope everyone has a nice Thanksgiving    with family and friends.
Remember to eat healthy and fill up on turkey instead of those diabolical desserts.
