I can't believe this...

Jul 29, 2008

I am being sent to a cardiologist today.  Never been to a cardiologist in my life.    After seeing a new doctor yesterday for the staph infection, I have been set up an appointment with a cardiologist because they are concerned that the infection will get to my heart and then it is fatal.  I am in shock.  Disbelief.  I am piniching myself to make sure I am not stuck in a horrible nightmare.  I just want to lose weight and live a happy, healthy life.  I will update more as I find out more.  Hugs, Karen

1 month out... 41 lbs gone...

Jul 29, 2008

One month ago today I had surgery.  I have lost 41 lbs in 4 weeks.  I am in shock that it really happened.  People are starting to walk up and ask if I am losing weight.  It makes me feel good.

Still having trouble eating certain things but I am taking it slow.  Soup really works best for me.

Went to a new doctor today and found that I have staph again.  (3 times since surgery).  This time they are doing a ton of blood work and stool specimens to see exactly what is going on with me.   If this would clear up, I would feel soooo much better..

3 weeks out.

I had surgery three weeks ago today.  I have lost 35 lbs as of today.  I am learning what my new stomach likes and what it doesn't like.  It is really trial and error.  I need to start taking pictures so that I can see the difference for myself.  I am going to make that a project of mine starting this weekend!

16 days out... Post op appt... 33 lbs GONE!

Jul 19, 2008

Had my 2 week post op on Friday.  (16 days out).  Stepped on the scales and I bursted into tears.  The lady weighing me said... Is something wrong?  I couldn't even speak.  I just shook my head no.  My husband thought it said 23 lbs lost... and he was saying... it is ok!  I said, OMGosh.. I have lost 33 lbs in a little over 2 weeks.  She said, yes and the scales are actually 3 lbs heavy.  (I am not counting that.. I am counting what was on the scales).

Still have an infection in my intestines.  Doc gave me additional meds... if I am not better by Monday, he will call me in additional meds.  As of this morning... I am not any different than I was.. hopefully the new meds will start working before Monday.

I am feeling some better... starting to eat a few teaspoons of grits... and that seems to make me feel better.  Everything I eat or drink is still going straight through me because of the infection.  My surgeon told me that it is not normal and that is why I am so weak.

But aside from all of that.... I HAVE LOST 33 LBS!!!!!!!!!!!  Woooohooooooo

2 weeks Post Op Update

Hi, My name is Karen… and I had VSG 2 weeks ago today.  I have lost 23 lbs, according to my scales at home, since July 2nd (my surgery date).  I am starting to feel more at peace with my surgery and feeling better each day.  I have definitely gone through a rough time and most of it I did not share here because of folks getting upset if you post something that is not positive.  I honestly think it is important to hear all experiences so people can be prepared for “whatever comes”.   When I signed on to this group, I never read a negative post and everyone was happy as pie in the sky.  This was my primary place to hear from people that had BTDT.

Having said that… I am going to tell my experience here… because someone might be coming along behind me that my experience can prepare them for when things are not 100% wonderful.  Hope that makes sense.

Anyway, I had surgery on July 2nd.   The day after surgery, my left arm started to swell with red streaks.   I had three wrist bands on and two of them were so tight that it was hard to get anything underneath them to cut them off.  My internist came in and saw my hand and arm… and told me not to let anything else go though my IV.  He ordered me a shot of very strong antibiotics and the nurse came in and went right for my IV to inject it.  I said, NO, Doc wanted nothing else through the IV.  So she huffed and threw the meds away and walked out.  A few minutes later she came in and said, you were right.. and gave me the injection in my hip.  The meds were so thick that it was really painful.   They then removed the IV from my hand because it was huge, red and hot by this time.

The doc discharged me on the third day but requested that I get a hotel room since I live 2+ hours from the hospital so if my hand and arm got any worse.  He started treating me immediately for a staph infection.  The infection did not start in my IV site… but where they drew blood in the bend of my arm in surgery. I was originally supposed to return to work on Tuesday, July 8th but the surgeon did not release me until the 14th.   Fast forward to this past Monday, July 14th.  (I had been on Keflex 500 mg and that ended on Friday).  I get to work on Monday morning and they send me to Employee Health to be released through them to come back to work.  The NP looks at my hand and arm and tells me… go see a local doctor… you have an infection!   I went to my local doc and found that I had staph again, moderate blood in my urine and am definitely in ketosis.  Put me on two antiobiotics for the staph.   Doc starts questioning me about how I am doing.  I tell him… I have had (OK this might be TMI for some… if so .. skip it) I have had runny diarrhea since the day of surgery.  EVERYTHING I drink or sip on… goes straight through me and I have passed mucus and how can it smell if I am not eating??  After a few tests, I have been diagnosed with C. difficile.  (A bacterial infection in the intestines).  Now I have an additional antibiotic to take.   I return to my surgeon on Friday for a post op appt.  I am weak, tired, run down and of course most of this is probably stemming from the infections that I have.  I have returned to work and that has been rough but I am making it. The silver lining to this cloud is… in 14 days.. I am 23 lbs down.  J  Thankfully I have lost weight because if I had not… and I was sick… I would be ready to jump off of a bridge!  LOL That is my update… just wanted to share..
