<p>Hi, Marcia: Re: Depo shot; I've been getting this shot for about 10 years now. The pill made me nauseaus (sp?) and all other forms of birth control were not as reliable as the shot. I've been very fortunate in that it has helped level out my mood swings, and I don't have periods with it.
As far as weight gain, I don't believe that it has caused me to gain weight; I was gaining long before I started on it. I gained weight because I have an insatiable appetite and used food for comfort. Once I started on Zoloft last year for depression, I lost 20 lbs. simply because I was able to recognize when I was full, and it cut down my cravings. My problem is, I haven't been able to lose any more weight, and now my arthritis is so bad that I can barely walk. I eat considerably less than I did last year, but I'm still holding at the same weight.
I realize that lots of women do gain weight while taking it, and some have continual periods. For me, it's been different. I'll probably continue getting the shot (my hubby doesn't want any more children; quite frankly, at this point in my life I don't either) up until I've gone through menopause!
I just wanted to chime in as someone who has had a good experience with Depo. As with WLS, it's a decision only you can make for yourself. It's different with each person. For me (and my dh) it's been a God-send. I haven't noticed any more fatigue on the shot than off of it.
Good luck, whatever you decide!
