Sunday Musings

Jun 15, 2014

Good Morning!

It's 8:43 AM on this lovely Sunday morning (lovely by Oregon standards in that it's not raining......) I am three months out from my RNY and I feel better than I could have imagined. Yes, occasionally I am tired and yes, sometimes I have issues with food but I am very conscious about my choices, my eating style and logging what I eat.

Sometimes food gets "stuck" or I eat just a tad too much, or too quickly. I have wrestled with food choices but have prevailed every time except once. And that, is still do consider a success because I was with family and we had KFC from Big Boy Drive Inn, in our hometown Bismarck ND. I ate one piece of chicken, a smattering of BBQ beans, and a little cole slaw. I skipped the french fries and the gravy. YAY!

Going "home" was a fabulous trip, the first time I have not avoided all my high school friends because of my weight. In fact, I created an event on Facebook to invite anyone who was available to come out for the evening. And out they came. I was so touched!

I know that to everyone else I am still very overweight BUT I have come far enough in this journey to remember that what they think doesn't matter! In fact, I have been working very hard on the point that I don't care what people look like, I just want to spend time with them; therefore they are the same about me.  But my own secret is that I feel WONDERFUL and beautiful and more confident than ever!

Started this journey out a year ago at 312 pounds. I lost 12 pounds and then in January I kicked off the game by losing 5 more and then the required 15%. The day of surgery I was 280. Today, I weighted myself and I am 240.

40 pounds in three months, that's 3.3333333 a week, with two stalls over and done :)  I have 80 more to lose.

And TODAY, I started the Couch to 5k training program. I have a goal of going to Phoenix and doing the Rock and Roll 1/2 marathon in January. Watch it happen!!!!

Thank you to each of you who have offered support on this site, I appreciate you!!!!

6 weeks out

Apr 30, 2014

Wow, somehow I have a 20 day gap in blog posts. Somehow....let's see----finishing my semester at university of Montana; 4x/week sessions with a personal trainer, hiking, riding my bike, prepping for the Bloomsday 12k in Spokane Washington (this coming Sunday) and oh, yeah work.

Add to the mix learning how to eat, stay hydrated, what to eat at each stage---man!

Had my 6 week check-in today, 26 pounds down. Happy dance!

alrighty folks, this was a quick check in and I have to get back to my webinar.

Have a great day!

Hey---Grasshopper

Apr 10, 2014

I should be working on my homework. I am a Cultural and Ethnic Diversity Anthropology major, in my senior year. (I would live to graduate before I can order off the Denny's senior menu...) and I am 52 so it's going to be a race.....

Today is a great day to address how the process of weight loss has helped my self confidence so much. I have worked HARD, like everyone else, to get ready for RNY and then to establish better habits afterword. Yes yes, I am three weeks and two days out. I get that. I am a fledgling and I am definitely the grasshopper at the foot of the vets and seriously, honestly and openly using advice of those who have gone before me. Yup, I am in a little weight loss stall but I don't really actually care because i know how it is going to be over soon.

But now, even more than ever, I wake up each and every single day with an exclamation point in my heart, in my attitude and in my plans. So much support from family and friends and the fact that I have never wavered in my decision to do this.

OH vet peeps......I am ever grateful for your assistance, the fact that you share your experiences and sometimes that you might even sigh at we newbies -- it just makes us dig deeper for the information we seek. This site is a symbiotic relationship....we ask, you tell. And down the road we newbies will be the information fonts.

Hey tomorrow is FRIDAY and it's the best day of the week!

Peace!

It's Friday Friday Friday!

Apr 04, 2014

Hey all!

TGIF, and it’s trying t get a little sunny today on the left coast, USA.  Oregon can be tricky in the spring and I am looking for dry so I can ride my bike!  If not my bike, it will be a nice Friday evening to hit the gym before they close at 8pm. Treadmill, here I might come..

I have been hearing from a number of folks on this site, and I love love love that! I know I speak about my RNY surgery, weight loss, food, today’s weight, gas, bowel regularity, protein, eggs etc etc A LOT and it’s just nicer to discuss these issues with people who are in the same place as me. I betcha The Dude and some of my friends feel the same way…….  “Oh there she goes, mentioning the Miralax again………” Honestly, my dog is the only one who isn’t likely sick of the topic by now, and even her I am not sure about. She might be listening or she MIGHT be figuring out the quickest way to my carotid artery….  ;)

Tomorrow I am going to head to Washington to spend the evening at a friend’s house because The Dude is working swing shifts, and weekends. So looking forward to this trip, see a couple friends and get out of Salem for a day and a half.  What are YOU doing this weekend?

Peace,

Mary

Life is delicious! Taste it and savor each bite!

Week 2 Check-Up

Mar 31, 2014

Down 2 pounds from last Wednesday's one week check-in. Total 12 pounds down since 3/18. That's aside from the 11 or so pounds that i got to bring home from the hospital as my souvenir.

But really truly happier is that my BP was N.O.R.M.A.L.  normal.  yes, I didn't have to say OH! I had coffee. or OH goodness, traffic was horrible on the way here. I was able to fist-pump in the air to the delight of the MA who took my vitals today.  Ankle and leg swelling is GONE! My face is no longer puffy.

I got on my brand new bike and rode it yesterday. And I went to the gym today, AGAIN!  Met The Dude for coffee and I even (after 16 months in Oregon) went and got my Oregon driver's license. Watch out now! ;)

Back to work on Wednesday so that means tomorrow, The Dude's "Saturday" he and i will have the time to have an exploration adventure. For that, I am most grateful.

So tomorrow, the long-awaited day for SOFT FOODS! Oh yes baby....this lady is going to have scrambled egg whites tomorrow MORNING! Then, an adventure.

Life is amazing, life is good, life is (as my father says) DELICIOUS!

May your Tuesday taste good

Ten Days Out

Mar 28, 2014

I am 10 days out, and I have not felt this strong, healthy and pain-free in a.long.time. My energy level is pretty decent, although since I am definitely taking advantage of not being at work to indulge in a daily nap. I have been hitting the gym to walk on the treadmill the days that are too rainy to walk much outdoors.

Track track track EVERYTHING from exercise to water to food intake--it's so important. I will return to work in 5 days, so on Sunday I am going to use my tracker to pre-plan my menu for the week. Tuesday I get to have soft foods added, one thing new each day. I had a dream about a scramlbed egg the other night. I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO ready  :)

I ran some errands today and forgot to pack protein, by the time I got dog food at Petco and miscellaneous at Target (including yogurt!) I was famished and feeling a littl weak. I ate a greek yogurt while still in the parking lot. Waited about 5 minutes and felt ready to tackle afternoon traffic across Salem.

Anyhow, I want to discuss something important....I have removed the words (in reference to food and eating behavior) "bad" or "good" ....gone---banished! I also do not say things like I was "bad" today in reference to food. I do not put values on food any more, that is something I started working on about two years ago and it's become a habit, a very important one in my divorce from food.

Since December, I have been consuming for fuel, and it's paying off! Food is not "bad" ---- It's about making choices. I choose the things my body needs.....such as yogurt in a parking lot so I don't crash into someone else! :)

Hey all, happy Friday

Five Days Out...

Mar 23, 2014

Five days out....really! There were days, oh like beginning of March, way way back when I thought I would never write those words. :) But five days out and I feel AMAZINGLY well! Gained about ten pounds in the hospital but have lost those and 8 more as of today.  Feeling pretty spiffy. Am off pain meds and today I have to get a paper turned in that I was really unable to complete while "under the influence". Just could not get cohesive thoughts and do the work well.

Anyhow, getting my water in and getting my protein each day so far. Water in, gas out.......gotta love it!

Have a lovely Sunday each and every one of you. Life is delicious---grab it, enjoy it!

Home Again, Home Again....

Mar 20, 2014

not dancing the jig, quite yet. I owe a few people individual messages but am feeling a little not-up-to sitting at the computer for long. Surgery went great on Tuesday and was sent home today feeling pretty darn well. My surgeon completed the RNY and she fixed my hiatal hernia I have had since forever! The hernia incision kicked up some extra extra air into my shoulder but as soon as the farting commenced upon walking that dissipated quickly.

Gained 12 pounds while in the hospital which isn't bad, but already since this morning have said good-bye to 5 of them as I have been on a normal amount of Lasix and have been getting all that excess fluid expunged. I love that word 'expunged'.

Thanks to one and all for hanging out with me --- whiskeyten for stopping by to say HI! That meant a lot and you look fab! Jill who stopped in and Lori I met walking in the hallway.  and Michelle who works in the hospital, has had the same surgery and came by with flowers and a card. Thanks for caring! Thanks ladies ~!

Just a note for those coming up after me-----

I took a full bag to the hospital with me

What I DID use:

Sugarfree breathe spray (see how it's at the top of my list?)

My kindle and charger

My Smartphone and charger

Chapstick

Deodorant

Incentive Spirometer

hose and mask for CPAP

My Bariatric Surgery Binder I was issued in January and contains my bariatric LIFE!

What I DIDN'T use

My book i need to read and turn in a paper for tomorrow

my cool jammies

my slippers

my extra soft hoodie for a "robe"

I used the toothbrush and toothpaste that the hospital gave me....

_____

Stay tuned for the next series in this adventure!

Hugs to one and all, far and wide

Today is the First Day...

Mar 18, 2014

Of the rest of our lives.  OK---we have all heard/said/thought that very phrase that was popular in the 1970s, the beginning of the age of self-disclosure. But I really feel as though today is the first day of the rest of MY life for I am committed and ready to go to the hospital in a few minutes for my RNY. The event I have been planning, saving and hoping for for a long long time. I have been working hard to get here.

SO, The Dude is ready, my bags are packed and the dog is trying to figure out if she gets to go or not.

XOXOXOXO

see you on the loser's bench!

So Close!

Mar 16, 2014

Now fewer than 48 hours to my RNY date with Catherine Boulay and her bariatric staff at Salem Health, in Salem Oregon. The real countdown is on. I have continued to lose weight since I "made weight" last Monday. Stayed true to the pre-op liquid diet and am SO ready to move on with this project.

Today I kept busy --- went and looked at, tried out and chose a new bike The Dude is going to buy for me. Yesterday was my 52nd birthday and he is going to pay for a new bike for me. A good one! I found exactly what I want at REI --- rode it around the parking lot and found out what a really decent bike can do for the biking experience!

Now, I need to do some homework so I don't have to try to do it while under the influence of pain stoppers :)

Hope everyone has had a fabulous weekend, mine was really really nice.

Peace

Mary
