Day 3 - Post Op

Jul 14, 2010

Well, I came home yesterday.  It was a 40 min drive.  My husband tried to avoid the bumps.  But in hindsight, I should have taken a pillow to hold over my stomach and help hold things in place.

My pain in the hospital was very minimal.  I was expecting it to be ALOT WORSE!  I do have pain at home if I don't get my pain meds taken at exactly the 4 hour mark.  My stomach feels like I've had a really bad flu and I've been throwing up for days.  (No I haven't thrown up, be if you had to describe it, that is what it feels like.)  I think my muscles feel the worse around my arms and neck.  Probably from trying to get up and down without using my stomach.

I love to drink water and don't feel like it is going to be a problem to get in my water and protein drinks.

One thing for sure... you don't get to sleep in the hospital.  I think I had a total of 3 hours of sleep while I was there.  There is always someone coming in to check on you.  It feels great to be at home and sleep for hours at a time.

I am still glad I had it done.  Post more later!

It is really going to happen

Jun 29, 2010

I have a date for surgery (7/12/2010) and its starting to sink in.  This is really going to happen.  This has been a long journey to get this all approved.  And I have to thank my company I work for, as they worked their tail off to change the insurance policy so it would cover the Gastric Sleeve.  It is nice working for a company that really understands the benefits of having their employees stay healthy.

I have my appointment with the surgeon on Thursday and then i will find out about the liquid diet before surgery.  I think the only thing I am worried about is the pain afterwards.  I have never had much of a tolerance for pain.  I'm sure every day will be better post op.

Thanks for everyone's support.  I will keep you posted after surgery.

The Journey Has Begun

Feb 18, 2010

I have visited with my surgeon this week, Dr. Kowalski from KC Bariatric Center.  The visit went very well even though I was nervous.  I was so worried that I would feel like I just entered an assembly line of people wanting the same goal.  After first arriving, filing out additional paperwork, they asked me for my Non-Refundable $500 program fee.  Was this just a way for them to make money and do they really care about the patients?

After meeting Dr. Kowalski and Jan, my case manager, I felt much more relaxed.  Could I really lose weight and look like the people I am so envious of?

I have appointments now with my Dietician, Psych, EGD is scheduled, and met with my Cardiologist today.  My cardiologist was very encouraged that I was going down this path.  But when I mentioned doing the gastric sleeve vs lap band, he was concerned as this was a permanent thing and no going back.  Am I doing the right thing?
