Getting Prepared....

Apr 29, 2009

I've been reading and researching what kinds of things I will need after my surgery.  There is a lot of information out there and it can be very confusing.  If you have the opportunity to try the different proteins, I would recommend that you do.  I didn't have that opportunity as I had only a week to between getting my instructions from my Dr., to the date of my surgery.  So, I ordered the protein starter sample pack and two of the Arista Gourmet SF Syrups from BariatricEating.com and I ordered the UnJury travel packs to try (chocolate, vanilla, strawberry sorbet, chicken soup and unflavored).  It's not the ideal time to find my favorites, but at least it starts me off with a lot of different flavors and choices.  I know there are more out there, but this will have to do for now.  I will order some other samples after my surgery.

Where my diet the first week home from the hospital will be liquids, I picked up a variety of flavors of Sugar Free Jello and some low-fat broths - chicken, beef and vegetable flavors.

I know I'm supposed to "try" and drink 64oz of water each day, so I also got a few cases of bottled water in the smaller, 12oz size to help me keep count, so to speak.  Oh, ok, I didn't get the water - my sister Diane got it for me.  She has been kind enough to let me stay at her house after my surgery for the first week, and has been kind enough to do some of my shopping - she is a sweetheart

I decided to stay at her house, because it's closer to the hospital, her house is much larger than my small apartment, so I would actually be able to walk around, inside of her house and it will just be easier all around for my husband, Steve and me.

Unfortunately, he couldn't get the time off from work on the day of my surgery, and to tell the truth, I would rather he not be there because he hates hospitals and gets very nervous - I don't want that to transfer to me (lol)!  He's my sweety and I know he's worries about me.  The good news is that he was able to get the day after my surgery and the following week off to help take care of me!  Yeah!

Pre surgery liquid diet & exercise

Apr 20, 2009

I am currently on the pre-surgery liquid diet and it's been a little difficult - I am so hungry!  I especially have difficulty staying on the liquids during the weekends - I think it's part of the social thing.  The good thing is I do go back to full liquids come Monday morning.  I've lost 14.5 lbs on it and hope to lose another 6lbs before my surgery on April 30th.

I worked out in our gym at work - I did 25 minutes on the treadmill and then did some of the weight machines for another 20 minutes.  I'm not much of an exerciser, so I'm actually doing pretty well with the exercise.  I won't work out tomorrow as I have a "training" session in the evening for my RNY surgery.  But I'll work out again (a little longer) on Wednesday and Thursday to make up for it.

About me....

Apr 17, 2009

A few years ago, an acquaintance of mine had gastric bypass surgery (he is doing wonderful and looking fantastic!). He had “discreetly” entered the hospital and when I saw him next (just a few weeks later), he looked amazing and happy! I actually didn’t realize who he was as he had shaved off his beard and cut his hair – I didn’t know it was him until someone starting talking about great Paul was looking!   He has been kind enough to talk to me about his surgery and answered all my questions over a period of months.  This is when I started thinking about weight loss surgery for me – I started doing a little research but not so much for me to make any decisions. I still didn’t have enough information to make an informed choice and I still wasn’t sure that this was the route I wanted to follow.

About a year and a half ago, I decided to go to an informational presentation at Lahey Clinic (Burlington, MA) to find out more about weight loss surgery.  My husband Steve came with me, as I wanted to know what he thought. The session was terrific – full of information. The speakers were the team that we would be seeing and working with if we decided to have the surgery. So it was great being able to see and hear the Doctors, the nurses, etc. and be able to ask questions directly. They also had patients that had undergone weight loss surgery discuss what surgery they had, how they did, how they feel now. It was truly amazing how much the surgery affected their lives.   Steve and I discussed the session on our drive home and he told me that if I was interested in looking into it further, he would support me (he really is the sweetest!). Please understand that my husband has never, ever made any comments about my weight – he married me as a “big” girl and has always been supportive of everything I've wanted to do.

I still couldn't decide if this was for me - so I continued to do research and really, really think about what I wanted.  I decided to attend another informational session about a year later and shortly after that I decided to at least make an appointment for the consultation to see if I was a candidate for weight loss surgery and get more information about it.

Well apparently I was considered a candidate for surgery - I was told that I was considered "morbidly obese" - it's not bad enough that I already knew I was heavy, but to be labelled "morbidly obese" and have it actually written somewhere, seemed to make it official - something that will follow me for the rest of my life - unless I do something about it.

I am not doing this for any other reason than to get healthy.  I am doing this for me - I want to get healthy. I have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, asthma, sleep apnea and severe degenerative disease in my lower back.  I will never be "skinny" nor would I ever want to be, but I have too many co-morbidities than I care to have and I really want to be healthy and comfortable: mentally and physically.
