OK, only 2 days before the seminar. I have in my head that this will officially begin my journey. As I read everyone's profiles, I can't help but remember certain things throughout my life that I feel had a direct impact on my self image.

My mother - as I was walking down the block with my cousin and my mother laughing and making the comment that we look like the number 10 (think about it).

Grandmother - "Rachelle, you have such a beautiful face. Are you trying to lose some weight? Here, sit down. Have some bracchiole"

Brother - "Yeah, remember the time we went to ride the ponies and the legs started to give out on the one you were on?" (this did not happen)

My mother - I didn't want her to worry about me having surgery so I didn't tell her I was researching it. When I finally did tell her, her reaction was "Oh, thank God. You know, that's a very personal thing. You can't just bring it up to someone. Oh, I'm so glad. This is what you need to do. Do you mind if I tell so & so?" (let me say here that I am happy for the support, just wish it was relayed a different way)

Thankfully all my tests came back ok and my kidneys are fine. I can now continue on my path to getting WLS. I am scheduled for a seminar at NYU on 5/11/06. Believe it or not, I'm very excited about this.

Well, I went in to see my PCP last week for my monthly weigh in and the results of my blood and urine tests from my physical. I gained 4 pounds. I'm up to 246. Not good. She was not happy (I'm not happy either). My urine test came back showing protein in my urine at 3+. Not good. PCP had me go for a 24 hour urine collection for proteinuria and for a renal ultrasound. Hopefully she will have the results of those two tests today and all will be normal. The last thing I want to deal with at this time is something being wrong with my kidneys. Needless to say, this all has me a little worried.

I went for my physical today. My weight is up to 242 (I'm 5' 5"). I mentioned to my PCP that I have been researching WLS. She said that while she does prefer more conventional methods, given my family history of heart disease and diabetes, and my weight going constantly up and down, she will support whatever I want to do and will give me whatever letters and documentation I need. My insurance requires 6 months of Dr. supervised dieting, so she wants me to write everything down, stay within 1600 calories, follow Weight Watchers, the food pyramid or a diabetic diet, and I have to weigh in with her every month.

The next step is a seminar with the surgeon at NYU on May 11. I'll take it from there.
