Dr. Portenier was my surgeon. I had the Roux-en-y gastric bypass surgery September of 2012. Overall, I've been very pleased with my results and the surgery. Dr. Portenier was good. I didn't like the fact that on several return appointment days, I didn't get to see him, but a "fellow." I haven't been back to see him since September 2013 and there has been no contact from their facility to do any follow ups to check to see how I'm doing. I feel like I've been left out in the cold by DWLC.

Dr. Sudan is an expert in performing the Duodenal Switch. He is a no-nonsense guy with a great deal of professionalism that I appreciated when performing my surgery. If you have any questions about my experience with Duke or Dr. Sudan please feel free to contact me.

Dr. Sudan saved my life! I had been having stomach pains that were getting worse and worse. I was nauseated and had lost over 50 lbs. I had been under the care of other physicians for 7 years, trying to diagnose my problem. I went to UNMC, September 2001, and saw Dr. Timothy McCashland who did numerous tests and, who turned me over to Dr. Sudan for an exploratory. Under anesthesia, my heartbeat became irregular. Dr. Sudan instantly recognized my symptoms as being a carcinoid tumor and removed 18 inches of intestine, forever curing my horrid pain and nausea my tiny tumors were creating. I can never sing his praises highly enough. As well, he is a pleasant man with a wonderful bedside manner.

I was a patient of Dr. Sudan's when he was at UNMC many years ago. Wonderful man. Great surgeon. Never had any problems whatsoever. He saved my life and for that I am thankful and most grateful. Thanks, Dr. Sudan!!!! I'll never forget you because you gave me many years of life I wouldn't have had otherwise. Yes, I am still not smoking! Another benefit of your skill!!!

This guy may not have the most congenial bedside manner - he is sort of quiet- but he worked wonders on me. I sailed through surgery and it has now been a full year. No problems. I highly recommend him.

Dr Sudan is very professional and extremely skilled. He's a driven and passionate surgeon who listens to his patient attentively and acts accordingly while keeping patient expectations realistic and down to earth. He's always clear about what going on or what's going to happen and has no time for games, frivolous conversations. He takes his job very seriously (as he should). He has a skilled support team of professionals behind him, all highly skilled, reliable and always helpful.
He uses state of the art robotic system to assist with his work making the procedure safer for the patient and reducing recovery time drastically. Not a once of doubt in my mind when it come to the right person for the job. Ranjan Sudan is the man!

I've met with Dr. Portenier only once, and I am still pre-op, so I will update this over time. So far, though, I like him. It's nice to have a doctor that "gets" me. He answered all my questions and while he was running behind the day of my appointment, once he was in the room I felt that I had his undivided attention. I have nothing negative to say about the support staff at Duke, either -- every time I've called I've received a phone call back pretty quickly. So far, so good.

I have only met Dr. Portenier once so it may be a bit premature to complete a review regarding his services. However,I can honestly same that the staff at Duke WLS leave much to be desired in the area of customer service. In my experience, they do not answer or return phone calls. They truly seem unmotivated to address the patients needs or questions. I realize that many patients trust the well deserved reputation of Duke Univ. Medical Center for being on the cutting edge of medical technology but it doesn't take a genius to pick up the phone.
