J. Bradford Doxey, M.D. Bariatric Center

When meeting Dr. Doxey for the first time,I was quite impressed. He actually seemed to care.We even kind of joked about his track record(which is quite good,by the way).Office staff in Chesapeake are great,so very kind.Wish all were like them.I must admit I was a little nervous about seeing him,but he really put my heart and mind at ease.

I was surprised he was much younger than I expected. He was very friendly and made me feel very comfortable from the beginning. I think the consultation went by fast, he gave me a handout of the procedure he was writting upside down in the booklet, I was impressed. He performs the laparoscopic surgery and showed me the size of the holes, I was impressed.
Dr.Doxey was recommend to me by a co-worker and I was very undecided until I spoke with him and had all my questions answered. Things are moving along very quickly and his office staff has been very pleasant to work with.

Dr. Doxey was very respectful. He explained every aspect of the surgery in a very detailed manner. He also took the time to explain the risks verses the positive outcome. Dr Doxey has maintained his professionalism throughout our visits. The follow up care is essential in the well being of each patient and blood tests are very important to make sure you are getting the proper nutrients. Overall Dr Doxey comes highly reccomended and upholds these great expectations.
The staff at Dr Doxeys Va Bch office (This excludes a very helpful woman named Vanessa) kept me waiting because they frequently lost my charts and became very rude in phone conversations. The Chesapeake office has it much more together.

My first impression of Dr. Doxey was that he knows his profession and was very nice to us. I brought my husband along for the first meeting with Dr. Doxey since I wanted my husband informed about every step of this process. Dr. Doxey took his time with us. I had done a lot of research so I was prepared for our meeting. Even still, he took more than an hour to sit in quiet and private room and discuss the entire proceedure as well as answer our questions. He never once made us feel uncomfortable or dumb for asking any questions. Dr. Doxey's staff is amazing. From the women out front to Melissa and his nurse, they are so friendly and helpful. I called numerous times with issues that now seem small but at the time they seemed large and his staff took the time to answer all my questions and reassure me when I had concerns. I really couldn't ask for a better support team in his office. After care is very important. Dr. Doxey likes his patients to attend the local support meetings and I do. A lot of the information gained is so helpful and it is also nice to provide some help to those just thinking about the surgery. I would give Dr. Doxey and his staff an A. I think both sugical competence and bedside manner are essential when it comes to this surgery. Dr. Doxey has both. The other doctors in his surgerical group also have outstanding bedside manner. Future patients should know that Dr. Doxey is outstanding, his staff is outstanding, and his partners are outstanding. The only downside is that he is very busy so you might have a bit of a wait to get to see him, but his abilities nad mannerism are worth the wait.

I selected to see Dr. Doxey after another co-worker had used him. From my first visit to now, 3.5 years and 3 surgeries later, I wouldn't change surgeons for anything.
I was 5'8" and weighed 282 at the time of my surgery on 9-9-99 (my birthday). My first impression of Dr. Doxey was wonderful. I had done much research and went in with info off the internet. I do not handle annesthesia well and Dr. Doxey, spent much time with me, answered all my pages of questions and didn't seem to worried about my annesthesia problems. Previously, I have even thrown up in the operating room while under annesthesia because it makes me so ill.
My by pass was an R-N-Y Open and I have had 2 surgeries since, one for an incisional hernia at 6 months and another exploratory 2 months ago for a sharp admoninal pain that could not be connected to anything through tests. Nothing was found but adhesions which he removed and the pain is gone.
My impression of Dr. Doxey has never changed, only gotten better. His office staff is absolutely wonderful. Teresa, his insurance person, did mericles when working with my insurance. It was CHAMPUS at the time and when she called to find out how to submit the paperwork to them, was told up front 'don't bother' it won't be approved. The computer will kick it out - reason - at the time, CHAMPUS would not approve this surgery for anyone over 50. Needless to say, she bypassed that old computer, sent it to a medical review board and it was approved in 10 days.
I became very active in the support group, starting about 5 months before my surgery was approved and leading up to being one of the group leaders of one of Dr. Doxey's two support groups. He is caring, quiet, calm, has a sense of humor, a great bed side maner and is just all around great. He has a structured aftercare program including both diet, exercise and support group attendance. All risks of surgery are covered by him in his previsit, and all are talked about very openly in support groups.
He has attended the support group as a speaker three times, contracts a nutritionist to attend and arranged for a clinical social worker (Dr) to attend as a speaker. He stays in contact with his support leaders and is helping us with a support group for post 1 year patients.
I rate him the best (as if you can't tell), and he has both surgical competence and bedside manner - both of which make a relationship work to the patient's best advantage.
He was first in our area to do laproscopic R-N-Y and has become a pioneer in it. At the time I had my surgery, he did not use staples as did other surgeons in the area and our incisions look like they are done by a plastic surgeon. At 3 years mine is a thin line and is hardly visable. He stays abreast of what is newest in the field and this is evidenced by the different instructions/surgery procedures given to current patients compared to 3 years ago. He readely explains why he has made changes and why this is better than something else.
I have had surgery 16 times since 1974 at 7 hospitals in md and va, with 10 different surgeons. For 2 years I worked as a Red Cross volunteer in surgery clinics at the Navy hospital here in VA and in Rhode Island. I feel I can fairly state, he is one of the BEST!!

My first impression of Dr. Doxey was that he seemed to be very friendly and easy to talk to,when asking questions about the surgery itself. He did seem to be a bit rushed though. Dr. Doxey was very informative about the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, which is what I'm having if approved. Since I had already researched this particular procedure for a couple of months now, I pretty much know what to expect. Dr. Doxey offers this procedure laparoscopically, with a gallbladder removal at the same time. Dr. Doxey's office staff seemed to be okay, didn't really talk to them. His nurse though, was very friendly. Dr. Doxey said he has done a little under 200 surgeries of this type at the time of my office visit, and we did address the risks of surgery. I've had two Ceasareans and two D & C's, so I know the risks.
Dr. Doxey expects you to attend support group meetings as many as possible, before and after surgery. He stressed eating healthy and following the Nutritionists recommendations.
Overall, I would rate Dr. Doxey at an 8, on a scale from 1-10. His bedside manner was very good, and he seemed to be knowledgable in what surgical procedures he offers.
