Medical University of South Carolina Bariatrics Bariatric Center

I actually haven't met my surgeon yet but I met the dr. in charge, Dr. Byrne, at MUSC. He was originally going to perform my surgery but he is so busy that I didn't want to wait that long for him to do it that I scheduled my surgery someone else on his team. I have heard great things about her so I am not worried in the least!rnrnEVERYONE on Dr. Byrne's team is GREAT!!! They are all so very profession, efficient, and helpful. I can't believe how blessed I am!rnrn10/31/06 - I met Dr. Morgan today while at MUSC for my Pre-op and ultrasound. She is really nice and I am very confident in her abilities. Couldn't ask for a better doctor!

Dr. Katherine Morgan is a very young intelligent person. I felt calm and safe wtih her. She knows exactly what she is doing and she made me feel at ease right away. She is taking all precautions with my surgery. I have a Mechanical Heart Valve and am on Coumadin because of it. So she is putting me in the hospital a few days earlier and stopping my Coumadin, putting me on the Heparin and making sure I have antibiotics to make sure my heart doesn't get infected. My aftercare, she is planning to keep me in the hospital until my blood gets to a safe level. She is very sweet, has a great bedside manner and is right to the point of the matter. I feel confident that she knows what she's doing and I feel safe having her has my surgeon.

My first impression of Dr.Byrne is that he tells it like it is and does not sugar coat things.rnHis office staff are all kind and will try to do whatever they can to help you get approved.rnFuture patients should know that no one will hold your hand through this process. You have to do your own research and be your own advocate when it comes to your insurance company. rnDr.Byrne stresses that aftercare is more important than the surgery itself. If you don't do the right thing and follow the directions given to you, you will be fat again (I told you, he tells it like it is).rnThe doctor has a very structured aftercare program including office visits, nutritional couseling, and several support groups.rnOverall, I would say that Dr.Byrne knows his stuff and will take care of you. He will give you the tool to help change/save your life but it's really up to you what happens.rnI would say that surgical competence is more important to me than a doctor who will stand at my bedside and hug me if I'm feeling blue.

I am not normally quite as enthusiastic about almost anything as I will be about Doc Byrne and his entire staff. Try as I might I simply cannot think of anything negative to say about the guy or for that matter the entire MUSC experience. I am a lifelong Charlestonian and always thought of MUSC as \"the teaching hospital\"....well it is but I cant think of anywhere else that I would rather go after my experience on August 11 of this year. I would give him and the staff a hearty \"10\" on all counts.

My surgeon is actually going to be Dr. Baker. She was wonderful. She made me feel as if the choice to have gastric by pass was a life saving one not a casual one. She had a wonderful bed side manner and was very considerate of my time. I hope all the other people I meet along the way are as sweet and caring as she was,

Dr.Byrne is my savior, if it was not for him I don't think I would be alive much longer. My 1st impression of him was very good, unlike the other surgeon that I saw 1st, my spirit really didn't agree with him. Dr. Byrne's and his staff are awsome!!!!!!!! I can't say enough good things about them. All of my fellow overweight friends will know about Dr.Byrnes if he can help them. Yes Dr. Byrnes does have a very good aftercare program, and explain the risks of having this surgery. On a scale of 1-10 I would rate him a 10 plus. I would rather surgical competence over bedside manner, because at least I know the Doc knows what it is that they are doing in the operating room.

My first impression was that Dr. Byrne was serious about what he is doing to help people lose weight. The office staff was very friendly and helpful. He is very strict about his patients sticking to the program. Followup is very important to them. He addressed every risk, and he told us his overall success rate. He was very honest and informative. I don't know about his bedside manner yet. My surgery is in October 2006.

Dr. Byrnes was fantastic!!rnHe was thorough and proficient throughout the process. rnIt was important that I have the best and he is the best. rnMy experience overall with him was great!!rnHis staff was \"on-the-mark\" at all times and proficient about the care before the surgery as well as what I would need afterwards.rnIf your looking for a great surgeon......the entire MUSC Bariatric Staff is awesome!!!!!

I had my consult yesterday (July 27th , '06)rn I was very impressed. I felt comfortable and at ease with both Dr. Byrne and Dr. BakerrnThey were very friendly and didn't try to hide any facts. The office staff was very sweet and patient. Their office is considered a Center for Excellence. Their success rate is phenominal. I am no longer worried. Just eager now!

Dr K. Morgan is a very pleasant person. She was very informative. I have only talked with her on the 1st visit to MUSC. I found everyone at MUSC in the Gastric Surgery area to be very nice and made you feel at ease. The enitre set-up that MUSC has informs you on all the good and the bad of this procedure. I even took my husband so he could get the information first hand. I feel they addressed all his concerns and never made him feel like he was in the way as some providers can do. I think they have good bedside manner & they definately are a very competent team there-which impressed me and my husband.
