My first impression of "Fuzz" was..."Boy is he a hottie!" *laugh* Ok, seriously, my first impression was "this guy looks way to young to be such a well known surgeon". After 20 minutes of conversation, I was completely won over that he was the doctor for me. He was completely honest and welcomed all questions regarding his mortality rates and complications that have arisen from surgeries he has performed.
His nurse manager, Susan, is just wonderful. She is very patient and knowledgeable and she has a nice sense of humor. She always gets back to you when you leave her phone messages or send her emails.
The psychiatrist Fuzz uses, Dr. Jeff Smith, is a great guy. He made me feel very comfortable during my psych consult and completed my required paperwork quickly and efficiently.
The nutritionist Fuzz uses, Mary Martha Smoak, is also a nice lady. She was very helpful during my inital consultation. She is a little slow getting the paperwork back to the surgeon because she is a very busy lady, but in the end, everything was in order.
Dr. Fuzz places great emphasis on after care. His patients are required to see both Dr. Smith and Mary Martha each time they see him for the first year after surgery. There is also a monthly support group meeting that is well attended by both pre-ops and post-ops.
On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give him a solid 10.
Dr. Fuzz Fernandez is everything that you look for in a surgeon....friendly, knowledgeable, easy to communicate with and very particular with all that are entrusted to his care. His first impression is great and gets better from there. His staff is very attentive and available. The aftercare required in this program is phenomenal in order to retrain our eating and exercise behaviors. I am extremely pleased with my surgeon of choice and the fact that he makes me feel appreciated as well!
My first impression of Dr. Fernandez was that he is very compassionate. Anyone who will take time out of a busy day like his to join each support group we have and answer questions, is a caring person. He wants those people, that come to him for help, to succeed in there weight loss efforts. That is why him and his entire team dedicate themselves to what they do. Susan Butler, the nurse coordinator, is also very loving and compassionate. I know that when I have my surgery, I will have all the support humanly possible. They stress aftercare because that is in fact the most important part of the journey. The initial consult with Dr. Fernandez aka Fuzz was great. By then I had already been informed about all the risks and benefits. Thanks to Fuzz, Susan, Mary Martha(nutritionist) and Jeff (Phsycologist) for helping us all through this process. You're GREAT!!!!!!!!!!
Dr. Fernandez is professional and courteous. He is excellent at his profession. He was informative and attentive. I would highly recommend him.
My wife and I have the same surgeon. I will have lap on October 21st and Mary will have it on December 9th. I cannot say enought about the efficiency and caring displayed by the entire WVU hospital. Appointments have all been ontime and very informative. The screening process and the testing required was very thorough. Neither Mary or I require a lot of hand holding from our doctor. The fact that he has a good reputation and demonstrates that he cares for his patients are enough for us. I noted some comments about how Dr. McNatt appeared distant and reserved. I believe that he is rather low-key. He clearly described the surgery and the risks and complications. I have complete faith and trust is his abilities. People must remember that he is not a family doctor. He is a surgeon and by the looks of it a very good surgeon. I will take competence over bedside manner anytime in a surgeon.

I am lucky to be one of the people to be cared for by Susan. She is a no nonsense person with a gigantic heart! She genuinely cares for each person that walks through her door and I am grateful for her.
Dr. Fuzz, what can I say he is a great guy and an even better surgeon! If anybody in a 60 mile radius goes to another WLS surgeon they are crazy! Dr. Fuzz is the BEST! The whole staff is excellent at the hospital also.
Dr. Fuzz was amazing! I could not have asked for a better surgeon.... Between him and susan I know i will be taken care of to the fullest! Everyone was sooo nice and very attentive to my needs. I have no doubt that I picked the right facility and staff! A++ on my scale!
Dr. Fernandez is very friendly and approachable. His staff is top notch and unequalled. The RN, Susan Butler, addresses each and every concern and seems be on the job 24/7. She will communicate via phone or email post op and do all possible to assist. Dr. Fernandez requires that all patients undergo a pyschological evaluation with Dr. Jeff Smith as well as several nutrional consults with Mary Martha Smoak. With this dedicated team of professionals, you never feel alone in this quest. They also have a support group that meets monthly and all 4 of them (2 Drs, RN & Nutritionist) attend the meetings. They do, of course, evaluate prospective patients and assess if the WLS is appropriate. They also are very upfront about the risks, however they have had no deaths since beginning the procedure at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital. I did have some difficulty post op and the entire staff was so supportive and willing to offer their time and expertise to assist. They also went the extra mile to make sure my insurance company extended my leave of absence so that I would continue to be paid, even though the insurance company originally wanted me to return to work within 4 weeks after surgery. I would rate this group at the very top of the scale or over the top! At each and every point in my journey, they have all offered their support and time - never hestiating to encourage me and do all possible to get my insurance approval, secure my leave of absence and make my surgery a success. I was approved for this surgery in 2000 and did not proceed due to the illness of my mother. I am ever so grateful that I waited... for that gave me the time to find Dr. Fernandez, Susan Butler, Dr. Smith and Mary Martha Smoak - the most fabulous team of weight loss professionals ever!
01/06/05 I met Dr. Fuzz and Susan today. They were both GREAT!! Dr. Fuzz is very young, but very caring and personable. He talked about everything and made sure I didn't have any questions. He seems like to me, top notch!! If I had to recommed a surgeon it would definitely be Dr. Fuzz!!! He gets a 10 in my book!!!
