Dr. Akshay Chauhan, Bariatric Surgeon

Akshay Chauhan, MD is a highly-skilled bariatric surgeon specializing in minimally invasive and robotic surgical procedures at the University of Colorado Hospital - Surgical Weight Loss Center. He earned his medical degree at All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi, India. He completed his internship and residency at the University of Colorado and completed three fellowships.

At the University of Tennessee/Methodist, he fellowship trained in transplant surgery and then went on to the University of Nebraska Medical Center where he trained in Advanced Gastrointestinal Surgery, Minimally Invasive, Bariatric Surgery. His third fellowship in bariatrics was completed at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Dr. Chauhan previously served as an Assistant Professor of Surgery-GI, Trauma, and Endocrine Surgery at the University of Colorado Hospital and as an Assistant Professor in Pediatric Surgery at B.P Koirala Institute of Health Sciences in Nepal.

Dr. Chauhan is a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) and the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS). He is the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions including Best Resident Teacher Applegate Award, the J Cuthbert Owens Award for excellence in Teaching and Patient care, International Surgical Jeopardy winner by the American College of Surgeons, and U.C. Chakraborty. He has authored many publications, abstracts, papers and book chapters and has presented internationally.

Dr. Chauhan is known by his patients and peers for his surgical expertise, kindness, and patience. He uses his expertise in performing weight loss surgery procedures mostly with the robotic technique including the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG), Roux-en-Y (RNY) Gastric Bypass, Lap-Band Adjustable Gastric Banding, and weight loss surgery revisions. Dr. Chauhan is experienced in treating patients that have regained weight after having weight loss surgery.

For patients that do not qualify for surgery or prefer not to undergo surgery, several non-surgical procedures are available including Intragastric Balloons, Aspiration Therapy, Endoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy, Endoscopic Gastric Bypass Revision, and Endoscopic Management of Surgical Complications.

In this intake visit, you will learn about the Surgical Weight Loss Center’s program requirements. With the patient navigator, you will cover pre-op journey, insurance requirements, and general surgery timeline.
