Dr. Kweku Hazel, Bariatric Surgeon
Kweku Hazel, MD, BS, is a bariatric surgeon specializing in minimally invasive surgery at theUniversity of Colorado Hospital - Surgical Weight Loss Center in Aurora, Colorado. He earned his medical degree at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine, where he started a program (Barbershop) dedicated to educating communities of color about chronic health conditions, including diabetes and high blood pressure. He went on to complete his residency at the University of Colorado.
An Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado Denver-Anschutz Medical, Dr. Hazel is a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). He currently serves on the community outreach and policy committees of the Colorado Vaccine Equity Taskforce.
Dr. Hazel has co-authored several publications and is committed to conducting research that advances socially responsible surgical practices. His primary objective is to enhance surgical equity and improve patient outcomes. He has been a patient advocate in Colorado communities and worldwide, having spent years advocating for better health care and access to information. He and his wife, Dr. Cynthia Hazel, are the founders of the Gyedi Project and have been front and center in advocating for vaccination fairness and acceptance.

With the mission to improve lives, Dr. Hazel is highly-skilled in general and bariatric surgery and routinely performs minimally invasive weight loss surgery procedures, including the Roux-en-Y (RNY) Gastric Bypass, Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG), Single Anastomosis Duodenal-ileal Bypass with Sleeve Gastrectomy (SADI-S), and weight loss surgery revisions.
For patients who do not qualify for surgery or prefer not to undergo surgery, several non-surgical procedures are available including, Intragastric Balloons, Aspiration Therapy, Endoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy, Endoscopic Gastric Bypass Revision, and Endoscopic Management of Surgical Complications.

In this intake visit, you will learn about the Surgical Weight Loss Center’s program requirements. With the patient navigator, you will cover pre-op journey, insurance requirements, and general surgery timeline.
