Basil Meyerowitz Bariatric Surgeon M.D., F.A.C.S.

I was just sitting here thinking about Dr. Meyrowitz. And I see that he has passed away. He did my stomach stapling in 1993 and in 2000s. Dr. Meyrowitz, was an excellent doctor I loved his accent. When I was in the hospital and wanted to take a shower a few days after my surgery the nurses would not even a system, they said we will have to wait until we talk to Dr. Meyrowitz. She said no one does anything with Dr. Meyer with his patients until he okays it. “We will all be in trouble.” He was always straightforward with his patients, nurses and other doctors. I remember being on the operating table and the table was not functioning right, he wanted to table to stand straight up, I was slightly sedated and he had me to get off the table and switch to another table. I just admire him so much and I’m so sad that he has gone on to the streets of gold. I will never forget him, he had given me my life back. Rest in peace Dr. Basil Meyrowitz.

my dr has retired. When I move out of the s.f. bay area we still wrote and if I was down there visiting family I went and saw him. He is my hero, a great man.He started doing these surgeries in the 70's he was a pioneer. He made sure I saw him every month,a B12 shot. we talk of my work, how it it effect my family, husband, friends, he was always there for me. Basil-baby my nickname for him and Dr Rosenweig both took care of me from l976 til 1988 when I move and even after that. He is a vascular surgeron, a teacher at N Y univer. before coming to CA to open up practice. I was rn305 lbs. 5 ft. sz28 mumu dress. We didn't have fat clothes store but lane bryants which I shopped since I was 5 years old. My lowest 135lb I looked ill. he told me to gain 5-7 lbs. so I was 140-145 for 15 yrs. When we moved I wasn't as active. Sit down job. Gain 7-9 lbs menapause, quit smoking gained 15 lb and that is where I am now.it was hard finding a Dr. who believed in this procedure in No. CA 20 years ago. Now everyone is doing it. rnrnNegative yes they have baritric mills where they pump them out. I have seen women go in with rolls of quarters in their bra so they will be over 100lb mark. They only see the Dr. every 6 months no B12 shot they have support group which I didn't have but I saw the Dr. every month. Your not made to go to support group and they are like a party instead of info most part and now I here they charge for you to go. and now 1/2 of them have gain it all back. they never learn to change there habits or they are into throwing up after going to resturants so they can eat it all instead of order the right way or take it home. I have had plastic surgery legs and stomach but would love to have the bat wings (arms) done. but don't trust the plastic surgeons up here in No rnCA. Thank you kp

I have nothing negative to say about him. I have yet to meet a more considerate yet professional surgeon. And i have had lots of surgery in the last 22 years. He has a piece of my heart that will be forever his for changing my life with his procedure. I spoke with Dr M today and he is still teaching and says he will officially retire in the middle of the year. God Bless him! rnrn<p>Dr. Linda Leffel was my plastic surgeon and at this point i am 3 years post-op from a breast lift/reduction and a panniculectomy.rn

First impression was fear, he seems to be a caring person now, but I don't feel comfortable with him for some reason. All of his staff was Kaiser staff and fine people. that he talked down to me and I am as old as he is or older. That he can be very strict when he wants to be, and at other times he is very nice. He stresses aftercare and woe is you if you miss an appointment. Kaiser has a wonderful after care program. I was warned about many things that could happen after surgery, but not the things that happened to me.I think that his surgical competence and bed side manner go side by side. But what ever this is my opinion and many people swear by this man.

I had the radical gastric bypass 7 years ago on 11-07-95. Dr. Meyerowitz gave me a new life. Chris was wonderful too.
I will always be greatful.
He is tough on his patients because this IS A LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCE. Not a fad that will go away in 6 months. It is easier than you think and harder in some ways. My insurance did not have after care for support. Reading the newer patients comments. Dr. Meyerowitz now has some available. Please use this it will help you. Loved ones do not always understand or accept your need and wanting for a better life. Only others that have gone through this will understand. There is no better Doctor in the world than Dr. Meyerowitz.
He is a chosen one. Good luck to all...

I met Dr. Meyerowitz on my Orientation Meeting at Kaiser So. San Francisco. He is an older gentleman who has been performing this surgery for more than 30 years. He is very experienced and knowlegeable, and convinced me that in order to have permanent weight loss, this surgery is necessary. He sounds a lot like Sean Connery when he speaks, so I enjoyed listening to him. I haven't had my personal consult with him yet (due to a change in surgeons). I will meet with him next Tuesday the day before my March 13th, 2002 surgery date. His staff is awesome! I've learned so so much from Kaiser!
My thanks to LISA, GITTY, & NADIA, and the entire staff, and support group, for your support and encouragement, and teaching.
Dr. Meyerowitz only performs the Open-RNY and not the Lap-RNY, partly because he says you can't teach an old dog new tricks, but he really feels strongly that performing the surgery open is much safer than Laproscopically because doing it open, you can see what you're doing and get a better staple line which helps prevent leaks, which can be very serious. I lost my friend due to her having a Lap-RNY which developed a leak, and led to perionitis.

very competent.Office staff,Chris, helpful,friendly and caring as is Dr.Meyerowitz.
He dicussed surgery in detail, but slide right over complications. Come educated and with questions. At time, he can come across as brisk, down to business. Has a structed aftercare program. Post op visits for life are part of his program. Now, addresses support group issue, when I had surgery, he wasn't into that. Now, he has group he recommends- I think his surgical competence is better...

Dr.Meyerowitz is wonderful. He tells it like it is.Dr.Meyerowitz office Staff are so nice and made me feel so comfortable at my first appointment I was scared to death I had no idea what to expect. Dr.Meyerowitz addressed the risk of surgery and everything that could happen. The risk is worth it though because there's a risk being like this.
