David Lourie Bariatric Surgeon M.D., F.A.C.S.

My surgeon was Dr. David Lourie at Huntington Hospital in Pasadena, California. My first and continuing impression of him was that he was quiet but very kind and trustworthy.
His nurse is very nice and most of the other staff is very nice.
The office required a 'program fee' that covers all aftercare. The hospital offers two different support groups, one general and one for people having difficulty.
The doctor was very open about surgery risks and encouraged candidates to go to the support group several times before surgery.
Excellent.
Great at both surgical competence and bedside manner.

I first met Dr. Lourie at the seminar which he and his colleague Dr. Powell require all prospective patients to attend. He seemed very personable and professional. Seminar attendees received extensive information about the risks of obesity, the history and types of surgeries available, the risks of surgery and Dr. Lourie's particular experience and complication history. At our first meeting he was again very professional and seemed open to my questions. He is not warm and fuzzy but seems to be extremely knowledgeable and I feel confident about his skills and his approach to WLS and after care. The staff is very nice, but the coordinator, Cynthia, can be hard to get a hold of and often does not return calls. I had to stay on top of things to make sure that testing moved along and that I got a surgery date. Dr. Lourie was present before and after surgery to answer my questions and I have been happy with his level or receptivity and availability. He even drops in now and then to the support group meetings which he encourages his patients to attend pre and post op. He has a very structured after care program and I have felt that I have been well educated in what to expect and how to eat to speed healing and promote maximum weight loss. I would recommend Dr. Lourie and his group to anyone.

Dr. Lourie is great. He was professional and a stickler for details. He is kind and easy to communicate with. I wanted a very detailed oriented surgeon and I got it in Dr. Lourie. He did an excellent job with all aspects of my care. He has done a huge number of these procedures and is expert in this type of surgery. I am in a very structured aftercare program. Support groups, nutritional counseling, etc. I think his bedside manner and surgical competence were both excellent (difficult to find with surgeons, most are low on personality.) I think his office staff can be frustrating at times. They were not too good at returning phone calls, etc.
Overall, I would use Dr. Lourie again without hesitation.

I was refered to Dr. Lourie by a friend of mine that had WLS a year ago. She seemed to have recieved excellent care while under his supervision. I first met Dr. Louire at the WLS symposium held at Huntigton Hospital in Pasadena in June 2004. In my opinion he seemed to be a very capable, competant, and professional surgeon. During his lecture he presented both the positives and the negatives of WLS. It seems some doctors only want to give the side they are supporting. So far Dr. Lourie has proved to be every bit as good as my friend had said he was. To me his bedside manner seems short, but he is very polite and to the point, and he really gives the impression that he wants do the best for you. He does seem do be fairly srtict about his after care instructions and diet, but I'm sure that's just because he wants the very best chance of success with the surgery.

Dr. Lourie seemed to be a very nice Doctor. I did not have very many questions for him as I have been recherching this for the last year. The office staff is very good. I never had to wait for a call back and I was aproved thru my Insurance in one week. Future patients should know that Dr. Lourie came very highly recommended. He has a woudeful reputation in the Medical community. Dr. Lourie was refered to me thru other Doctors not by patients. I normally get my referals from other medical staff ie.. Nurses (they know if your Dr. is good or not) Good luck to all may God bless you and guide you as you walk down this path.

Dr. Lourie is a very caring and gentle man. He is soft spoken but doesn't leave anything out of his evaluation and reccomendation. To this day I feel like I was very well taken care of by a truly concerned surgeon and staff. His office staff is professional and quick as long as you stay on top of them. It is important to be pro-active in any medical situation. Dr. Lourie has a very strict aftercare program that he finds extremely important to follow to the "T". His Tuesday and Thursday night support groups are invaluable and have helped me immensely pre and post op. I was already well studied on the subject of the surgery its risks and its benefits so I didn't have many questions to ask Dr. Lourie or his staff. On a scale of 1-10 I would give Dr. Lourie and staff a 10+ on surgical competence and bedside manner. He is the tops!

First impression was compassionate and caring. He still maintains the same impression for me. His office staff is awsome. He emphasizes after care and support groups more than anything else. He does have a structured aftercare program. The group has a mandatory symposium that discusses the risks and benefits. I would definately reccomend him to anyone thinking of having the surgery. Both bedside manner and surgical competance are very importance and Dr. Lourie seems to have both!

Dr. David Lourie is very soft spoken, very professional and his demeanor is very comforting. After visiting 2 other surgeons, I knew Dr. Lourie was the one for me. My impression of Dr. Lourie has not changed since my first hearing him speak. Meeting with him during my initial consultation was affirmation of his knowledge and confidence in Bariatric Surgery. His office staff is pretty busy. You often seem harried by their brisk manner however they will answer any questions you have - just make sure to ask! As of now (Pre-Op) I think the best thing for individuals considering WLS with Dr. Lourie or other surgeons in his medical group is to attend the symposium on Bariatric Surgery held the 1st Wednesday of each month - contact Huntington Memorial Hospital for specific dates or look them up on the web - then form your own opinions. I know that Huntington Hospital does have a support group and Dr. Lourie encourages your post op attendance. The risk of surgery is brought up during the initial symposium. He also will let you know of it during your initial consultation. I would encourage people to research the risks on their own as well. As for the 2 last questions, I will update on them after my surgery.!

First impression: Very caring, nice, polite, interested in your well being.
Post first impression: he seems as a great doctor. I've only met him once but have heard great things about him and have nothing negative to say.
Office staff: they seemed very nice. I've dealt with other bariatric doctor office (USC Univ) and they were very disorganized and extremely busy. Dr. Lourie's office staff seems great and they've returned all my calls and followed up with my insurance, approval process, and pretests.
Positives: quick turn around on appointments, pretests, response time from staff, materials provided to patients, hopefully I'll have a quick surgery date!?
Overall would rate him a 9 out of 10 (always room for improvement..tee hee)
