Donald Scholten Bariatric Surgeon M.D., F.A.C.S.

I first met Dr.Scholten in July at a support group meeting. He went over his credentials and the procedure and I was very impressed with him right off the bat.
I had my consultation on September 7, 2000 and I am more impressed with him than I was before. He is kind, honest, compassionate, intelligent and he DID not rush. He took his time explaining the procedure and answering my questions.
The staff at his office is AMAZING, I often felt like I was bothering them but they were so kind and caring, they made me feel special and they always remembered who I was.
Dr.Scholten makes you jump through a few hoops before scheduling a consultation. First who must attend a support group meeting, have a psych eval, turn in a long medical history packet and recieve medical records from your doctor.
Next a consultation is scheduled, after that meeting your request for surgery is sent to your insurance company. Once you are approved surgery is scheduled and onward to preop testing.
I have yet to be approved but I am looking forward to approval (keep your fingers crossed)

I met the wonderful Dr. Scholten Today Sept. 14th. :) What a kind warm Paitient Surgeon. Who didnt seem like he was in a huge hurry like alot of Drs. are. Yippeeeeeee Everyone iin his office seems very caring and friendly. I waited a little bit for hiim but hey when you want the best you have to wait and hes is worth it. :)

He was very warm and kind when I first met him.
My impression only got better.
His office staff were neat, very family like in nature to helping and talking to all the patients. Even helped me when BCBS denied me due to improper documentation.
I haven't found anything I dislike as to this date.
Future patients should know he is a very nice and caring doctor, and one who sympathizes with his patients fight with obesity.
Dr. Scholten emphasizes aftercare alot!
Yes I was given a structured aftercare program when I went to his consultation, he also talked to me of the risks that are involved in this type of surgery. He showed me a pictured copy of the RNY process and what was to happen to me, and he discussed the good and the bad while writing on this copy for me to take with me home.
I would rate him as an excellent choice for any and all to seek out for this surgery.
Srugical competance and bedside manners I do not know yet, but can only judge by his patients success rate that it will be more than adequate.

Dr. Scholten and his office staff have been a great help to me. They are all very kind and compassionate. He seems to be concerned and he is very willing to answer any questions you may have. He is a very kind and caring man. I've heard nothing but positive comments about Dr. Scholten and his staff, and have been very pleased with them so far.

I met with Dr. Scholten on 8/3/00 and found him to be an extremely sincere and sensitive individual. He was more than ready to entertain any questions I had, and spet a good deal of time with me and my sister, going over the particulars of surgery, but more importantly, explaining that this surgery is merely a tool in the process and lifelong work of losing weight and keeping it off. His staff was very friendly as well, and were more than solicitious of me and my needs. Grand Rapids is only about 90 minutes from my sister's home where I plan to stay immediately after surgery, so those initial visits will be much easier to manage. The trip to Grand Rapids from where I live is almost four and half hours. I went to Grand Valley State for my undergrad work, so I am somewhat familiar with the area and hospitals, thereby making this a better choice for than someplace else. While I am currently unable to rate surgical competence, I felt comfortable with Dr. Scholten's level of knowledge both of the surgery itself and the post operative care that is such a big part of this process. I'm currently awaiting the opportunity to speak with the person from the office who schedules surgery as Blue Cross has undergone some changes regarding approval procedures. After speaking with her, I'll hopefully come away with a surgery date.

Dr. Scholten was an excellent surgeon. I worked for a general surgeon prior to this surgery and knew he was highly recommended. I went to support group meetings in MI and they all recommended him also.
Extremely helpful, especially Ann.
No problems
He is an excellent surgeon. I suffered virtually no post op pain. Follow instruction and you'll do great.
A lot. It is very important.
Yes.
He was very honest and up front about the post op challenges.
Excellent
Both are great.

Dr. Scholten was all that I expected. He took his time and explained the surgery very well. We decided on the BPD/DS procedure for me. I had been laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes when he walked into the room so I had to explain that we had been waiting for a while and I had started to think up things to do, one of them being to blow up all the rubber gloves in the room. He took it all in stride and teased that he had a piece of paper saying I wasn't kooky. What a first impression I must have given him. A sense of humor goes a long way in my book. The office staff was great too.
