Donald Scholten Bariatric Surgeon M.D., F.A.C.S.

I had heard great things about Dr. Scholton from others that live in my rural part of Michigan which is approx. 200 miles from Dr. Scholton. I liked him and the office staff immediately-the staff on the phone before I even had my appt. were friendly, always ready to help me for the final step of getting an appt. I work as a L.P.N. in a busy office setting and have worked outpatient nursing for 20 yrs. so I knew this office staff knew what they were doing and realized how dedicated they must be. Dr. sat face to face with me and explained the surgery and what to expect. He then told me what he expected from me which was a weight loss of approx. 30 lbs. befor the surgery. Yesterday I visited the hospital and they had all my pre-op work set up for one day since I live far away-what a conveinence and again I realized how much time the staff put into this work. Everything was explained to me plus we had a meeting with the dietician who explained each post-op week and the menu. The very best structured aftercare program!!If I did not have complete confidence in this physician I would not risk this surgery-he would be the only one I would consider after meeting him, the staff and the surgery staff at the hospital.
Surgical competence is my priority-I'm not interested in a popularity contest, bedside manner is nice but not a must-Thank-God this physician has both.

I HAVE MEET WITH DR SCHOLTEN TWICE NOW ONCE AT A SUPPORT GROUP AND IN THE OFFICE. THE OFFICE EXPERIENCE WAS GREAT. SMILING FACES AND PEOPLE WHOM CARE. BEFORE AND AFTER PICTURES IN LOBBY. THE DR WAS A GREAT GUY AND EXPLAINED EVERY THING IN GREAT DETAIL.WILL UPDATE AS TIME GOES ON.my surgury date is feb 13 01. and all the staff has been great. let you know after surgury.

My first impression of Dr. Scholten was seeing him as confident and an expert. I feel very comfortable with him and was thankful that he was straighforward and to the point. He also listened to my concerns when the issues arose. He strongly emphasizes aftercare and makes it clear that WLS is just a tool to be used in conjunction with other tools. He has a very structured aftercare program. You must commit to diet, support groups, and frequent visits with your primary care doctor for follow-up. He was very straight forward about the risks of surgery. No sugarcoating but very personable. I rate him overall as fabulous. Surgical competence and bedside manner is terrific. 1/10/01: Dr. Scholten and his office staff have been terrific. To any potential future patients - you will not be disappointed, but comforted and relieved to be under such competent and compassionate care. I am 3 1/2 weeks post op and doing great. The only thing I am now concerned about is the tube that was inserted through my nose and into my stomach. The tube must have been too tight. A large scab formed and now I have a noticable deformity on my nose. I don't think it can be corrected without some type of surgery. At the time I was under so much pain medication that I didn't realize how bad it was. Make sure to check your tubes after surgery!!

My initial consultation was on 12/27/00 and this was my first chance to meet Dr. Scholten.
I have received wonderful information about his abilities as a surgeon from some of his former patients, and glowing recommendations from my primary care physician and my physician's assistant. I was a little concerned about the waiting time but I understood the reason for the wait once I talked to him. He was very thorough and really ensured that I understood. He apologized for being late but it really was not necessary. His nurse had explained that he had to take a call from another dr regarding a patient. I respected being advised of the reason for the delay and thought I can appreciate a dr who will put something on hold to attend to the needs of a patient.

my first impression of Dr. Scholten was he let me wait in the patient room for about an hour and three quarters, I was a little upset about that.
once i met with the doctor, he was very appologetic and was very nice and kind.
his office staff were very busy, but very nice
i liked waiting so long the least about him.
future patients should know that the doctor is well worth any kind of waiting you have to do, he is very thorough.
he emphasized aftercare very much so.
yes, he has addressed anything that could be a risk factor in this surgery.
i would rate dr. scholten a very positive excellent.
haven't had surgery yet, so don't know about surgical competence or bedside manner.

6/1/00 - First impression - Very soft spoken and nice. A good listener and very positive person. He assured he "he CAN help me" and "
I WILL lose weight and be healthier". The office staff were very nice and friendly. Any time I have called they seemed to take all the time needed to help me and didn't seem in a hurry. They called me about two days before they promised and you know that is very nice when it seems all you do in this "process" is WAIT. They seem to care about Dr.'s patients and it seems more than "just a job". Dr.'s qualifications and reputation is exceptional. He is very specific about aftercare and sponsors support group meetings in several locations, including one 50 miles north of G.R. near where I live. I am sure this will make a difference in my attendance. He did not address a lot of the risks of surgery, but it was indicated that he would talk to me more about that later. I did tell him how much I had researched the surgery and so may have presumed I knew the risks or would ask. (I'm not real shy). Overall I would rate him a 10 at this time. If I had to pick competence or bedside manner, when someone is going to rearrange/remodel me, I pick competence every time. But he was very pleasant also. NO PROBLEM!

I'm post op now and my opinion of Dr. S. hasn't changed. In fact, it couldn't be better. His care for his patients is very evident and he answered all my questions. I have had no complications and probably what some would call a textbook recovery. (PTL) I would recommend Dr. to any and all. You can't do better.

My first impression of Dr. Scholten was of his quiet confidence. He and his office staff put me right at ease. It was nice having the notebook of other patients' pictures in the waiting room to look at. He shares a lot of information, likes to draw pictures, and gave my husband and me opportunities to ask our own questions. He has a very structured program with a lot of things that need to be done before he even sees you. I liked that the psych report was sent to me. The staff also allows you to be very involved in arranging all the pre-op testing. Communication to my primary physician has been very complete. The only thing I was disappointed with was that I had to wait three weeks to schedule surgery because the scheduler was on vacation. Dr. Scholten also seemed to find humor in the fact that I "found" him on the internet (this site)!
