When I met Dr. Madura for my surgery consultation, he came in with a senior med resident who was making office rounds with him. Dr. Madura's approach was warm and friendly, as was the resident with him. His direct gaze and warm manner was so reassuring that I was in the right place at last. I only saw him for this well-informed first session. I was given very explicit instructions by his assistant, Samantha, who gave me every bit of information I needed to get going on setting up my pre-op testing and exams. I never had to call the office, except once, when I realized I had to get all my diagnostics in-network and not through Rush practitioners. The information given to me by Samantha gave me the confidence to proceed with my own appointments to get all of the pre-ops done. Soon all the pre-ops were complete and it was time for my family appointment with Dr. Madura, which would only be the second time I saw him. It was great! My brother accompanied me and when we met Dr. Madura and Sam again, it was like seeing old friends. My fond impression only deepened. The office is busy, but very organized for the large and great patient load Dr. Madura has. If there is a waiting time, it is worth it. Front desk personnel are very friendly and answer any question, even though they are very busy...one never gets the feeling of being rushed. I cannot find anything I did not like about my office visit experiences or about Dr. Madura. Future patients should come to Dr. Madura informed and prepared to ask any questions that will make a difference in either having the surgery or not. They need to be prepared to share their medical histories so Dr. Madura himself has more knowledge to go on. The future patient must be dedicated to the task of pre-op examinations, keeping appointments without being late and securing past medical records to be submitted for Dr. Madura's review. For the future patient to gain every advantage for Dr. Madura to do his best, the patient has to help with the medical insite by \"going along with the program.\" Dr. Madura must be informed of any medical history that the patient can provide. rnAftercare, dietary and surgical risks are more than adequately addressed. Dr. Madura works closely with Sue Mikolaitis, a registered dietician with specialized knowledge of bariatric nutrition. She, too, thoroughly covers aftercare, nutrition and general well-being points for good recovery. I rate Dr. Madura a Five-Star Medical General! Although surgery is upcoming, I am anticipating a great outcome due to my own good health and Dr. Madura's competent manner. He has conveyed his knowledge of the procedure to me and along with his kind manner, I am very optimistic about the outcome of my surgery. I feel priviledged to be his patient. Things do work out for the best!

I came to Dr Madura after my original surgeon cancelled (his corporation of surgeons wanted to him to to guarentee to do X amount of bypasses a year and he said no, so they cancelled hisinsurance). The minute I went into the office everyone was great! The staff was friendly and was willing to answer any questions I had before I saw him. He came in and examined me and was like \"okay let's pick a date\". Since i was already pre approved it made it that much easier. He was friendly and made me feel at ease and told me things no one else had and I really liked that about him. The one thing that impressed me most was his aftercare program. He told me he would see me the usual month, 2 month, 6 months and then a year and then once a year after that and he said it didn't matter if I moved away they would still do the aftercare no matter where I lived!!rnrnI am so glad I had Dr. Madura and his staff they have been wonderful.

I had a RNY procedure done on 11/9/07 by Dr. James Madura. I had a good impression of Dr. Madura right from the start. I felt like I was given the information I needed to make a good choice about having WLS. He discussed the risks involved to my satisfaction. I have never felt rushed during my appointments and Dr. Madura runs on time for office visits which is a big plus in my book. Aftercare has been ok. I have had my usual post-op visits and labwork done routinely. I think Dr. Madura's bedside matter is great and I have had a good surgical experience to date. rnrnHis office staff has also been great. My surgery was approved by my insurance fairly quickly due to the staff making sure things went smoothly. Samantha has been helpful and has returned phone calls when I've left messages. rnrnI would rate Dr. Madura and his staff as \"top notch\" and wouldn't hesitate to recommend him. I am almost 4 months post-op and I am down 83 pounds so far. I'm happy and I'm getting healthier everyday!

My first impression of Dr. James Madura was that he was extremely bright and compassionate. Although he understood my situation, he also told me that I need to sure that I was understanding the magnitude of my decision to have WLS. He explained absolutely everything to me and my grandma who came with me. She is hard to impress, and she fell in love with him as well. My grandma is my best friend, and she didn't want me to have the WLS just because she was scared for me. However, after she met Dr. Madura, she told me that she trusted him with my life and I should do this if I thought it was my only hope. His staff is totally helpful, kind, and quick to return phone calls. They understand all of the insurance stuff and know how to get approvals and the such. That whole office is superb!! Actually, there was nothing about the surgeon or his staff that I did not like (that is the complete truth). He lets you know all you need to know for after the surgery. He has an amazing dietician who gives you this huge book for how to eat and drink after the WLS. Every single thing you need to know is in that book. He addressed every risk, from minor bleeding to death. He even drew out how he would make the incisions and what he was going to be doing during the surgery. On a 1-10 scale with 10 being the best, I would honestly gi ve him a 10 without a doubt. I am thankful to my PCP for recommending me to Dr. Madura. He has changed my life forever and I am so thankful that I was able to have the surgery covered by my insurance, as I would never have been able to afford it on my own. Surgical competence is just as important as bedside manner, which is why you should ask other people how their own experiences were. Word of mouth is the best form of advertising. This way, others can get the absolute best care and best surgeons out there and have their mind at ease that they will be in good hands. GOOD LUCK!!

Dr. Madura seemed nice, holds nothing back, and is very honest. Because I am still waiting for approval with insurance, I really haven't gotten to know him well. The office was well organized, and I enjoy working with Samantha, she is quite efficient with her work and a great nurse.Surgical competence is by far the important factor in any surgery. I would only chose a surgeon who is well experienced in this or any field. Bedside manner is important also. A patient needs to feel their Doctor is friendly and concerned about them. TLC goes a very long way. Even though the surgeon has seen your insides, he needs to know who you really are and know that person too. I think having a good relationship with your Physician puts you in a more confident and trusting role. It also helps you heal faster too.

RNY Lap on 2-3-6. Dr. Madura's bedside manner was great. He is caring, and quite humble about his expertise on WLS. He is thoughtful, reassuring, and addresses situations immediately. I know I could not have chosen a better surgeon in the State of Illinois. If anyone is looking or someone in the Chicago area, see him, and please consider Rush Medical Center.

My first impression of Dr. Madura was that I felt like if he could have rushed through the initial meeting he would have, but I asked a lot of questions and slowed him down to where I felt I was able to understand everything he was telling me, I never met with him agina and did nt see him agian until after my surgery. He came in sqeezed my stomach gave me a few rules to follow and was on his way. His office staff is a little standoffish at first, but I call so much they know me by now. He really wants yo uto be in a support group after surgery. He painly told me the risks and the benifits of sergury and I liked that alot. I believe him to be a very competant Dr. and when I see him in office visits he is always very cordial and professoinal and always willing to answer questions and give his honest opinions about how your doing so far.

first impression of dr.madura was that he made me laugh and put me at ease. my impression changed after he told me the gory details of what i was about to embark upon. the office staff was very informative and nice. what i liked most about him was that he did not look at me like i was a whale. future patients should know that while he is very funny, he is also all business. dr. madura told me that the surgery was the easiest part of what i was doing and that everything after surgery was what i would have the most problems dealing with. which is why he referred me to obesityhelp.com. his aftercare program requires me to see alot and to report any problems at once. the first thing dr. madura addressed with me was the risks of surgery, he didn't want me to think this was like getting a shot and putting a bandage on it. i would give dr. madura four stars because he is patient and understanding. i think that surgical competence would be the most important part of any surgical procedure, but dr. madura has a really great bedside manner.

Dr. Madura is very professional. He knows what he is doing. He is very confident in his abilities as a surgeon. At times, he can be a little rushed. He is very busy because he is the head of bariatric surgery at Rush but, if he is not available to answer questions, his nurse always is. Surgical competence is definately and "A". So far I haven't had any problems with him or his staff. Everyone is friendly and understanding of the changes that I have been going through as a result of the surgery. Rush has many after-care resources such as a nutritionist and psychologist. I will be taking full advantage of both. There is also a bariatric surgery support group at the hospital that meets bi-monthly. There are informational sessions as well. Since I am only 14 days post-op, I haven't had a chance to participate in the group yet but I will. Overall I'd say that my experience with Dr. Madura and Rush has been great.
