My first impression of Dr Madura was his ability to make you feel at ease. I liked the fact that on my first visit I actually met with the man who would be performing my surgery. Other programs make you meet with vairous other staff before you even meet and are comfortable with the individual who will be cutting you. Dr. Madura is very detailed about every aspect of the surgery. He tells you his concerns up front and tells you the risks. He makes sure you understand this is a LIFE CHANGE and expects you to do your part. He is very up front that you make the commitment to use the tools he gives you.

As far as my impresson over time, It has gotten better. He has an extreme amount of compassion for his patients and values EACH and EVERY one. My first visit after surgery, he saw me in the hall and rememberd me by name. That impressed me with the large amount of patients he has, he rememberd me too!

His office staff is very helpuful. In the office I relied alot on Samantha who runs the back office and is Dr. Maduar'a right hand person. She is very helpful regarding insurance and followup appointments you need. She is the one to call with questions.

There is really nothing I liked least - Unless you want me to include my NG tube after surgery! That I could have done without!

Dr. Maduras patients should know that he expects them to take control of their own destiny. He is there to help but likes his patients to educate themselves and know the kind of life changes they need to really make this surgery worth wile.

As far as aftercare, Dr. Madura does follow up and returns all phone calls. He does have a support group that meets on a regular basis and sends you the info on dates and times.

I would rate Dr. Madura a 10. I have witnessed other programs and feel that the one on one personal attention Madura gives you is the best. His surgical competence is awesome, his surgical staff is great, his bedside manner is also first rate. He takes time to be personal yet professional. I would recommend Dr. Madura to anyone considering this surgery in Chicago. As a matter of fact, I know for sure at least 5 people I have referred have actually made appointments to see him.

First appointment is May 12th but he has been highly recommended by my coworkers-Im the director of an ambulatory surgery unit. The Doctors and Anesthesiologists all felt he was an excellent surgeon with good outcomes. I really want to have the procedure done laproscopically and I want good followup care.

Dr. Madura made a very good first impression. i think the thing i liked about him most was that he never judged, like he never made me feel like i SHOULD OR SHOULD NOT have the surgery. sometimes when people look at me their reaction is like well u aren't THAT big, why would u do that? but not with Dr. Madura. one of my girlfriends recommended him HIGHLY and she was 100% correct. Dr. Madura is very laid back and has a really good bedside manner. he's straight forward and will explain everything in the most minute detail, he even draws a picture of the changes that will take place with your GI system. i also liked the fact that at your pre-op visit he requires that you bring at least one family member or significant person in your life to insure that u not only will have proper support post-op but to make sure that THEIR questions/concerns are addressed. the day after my surgery which was a SATURDAY (i want u to note that it was a SATURDAY and there is usually N0 such thing as an attending surgery physician in the hospital visiting patients on the weekend) i was returning from my 'leak test' and guess who was standing in my doorway? yeah, the man himself. he was like hey, how is it going? how are u feeling? even going so far as to tell me that i looked pretty good, even with my crazy rash from the anesthesia. then HE (not a resident) took out my NG tube and hung out for a few minutes shooting the breeze and checking out how good i trolled the hallways. i really, really like this man and his manner. i would recommend him and Rush Hospital in a heartbeat. the office staff is pretty cool too. i was rejected by my new insurance company after prior approval by my ORIGINAL insurance company and his assitant, Samantha, was extremely helpful in dealing with the insurance company. i have to get that woman a fruit basket or somethin'.

I had previously met Dr. Madura last year at a couple of his support group meetings while my prior doctor was still setting up his schedule of meetings.I was very impressed with his way of informing you about everything the risks, all the pro's & con's,
diet, importance of attending support group's post op,Pin pointing about your diet to be strictly followed, the post op check up's,everything down to every single issue from day 1 to 15-20 years on done the road and lots of diagrams! He is a very detailed doctor soft spoken and very very caring!I liked him immediatly so this year I decided to consulte with him and made the final decision!"" PLEASE let me say...My previous doctor was very detailed, but it just didnt work out"".

My husband & I met with Dr. Madura and both had a very good impression of him. We both feel very comfortable with him and have a lot of faith that he will do a good job. At this point (3/27/03), I am still pre-op, so I will have to check back after the surgery. He has said that he does a lot of these surgeries everyday and can hardly get enough surgery room time. He seems very smart and he has a good sense of humor too.

His staff was great too.he deffinatly emphasizes aftercare and does have a support group that you can go to. He deffinatly adreesess the risks that go along with your individual case . I would rate him a 9 and his bedside manner is alright but remember he is a surgeon first but beleive me that is ok.

I MET DR JAMES MADURA ONE TIME AND HE WAS A REAL SWEETHEART. HE WAS REALLY NICE, STRAIGHT FORWARD AND TO THE POING. I LIKE THAT IN A DOCTOR. I DO LOOK FORWARD TO HIM DOING MY SURGERY. HIS OFFICE STAFF WAS VERY POLITE AND HELPFUL WITH ALL THE QUESTIONS I HAD. FUTURE PATIENTS SHOULD KNOW THAT HE IS EASY TO GET ALONG WITH AS LONG AS YOU DO WHAT YOU ARE SUPPOSE TO DO.

HE EPHASIZES VERY MUCH ON AFTERCARE. THE THINGS THAT YOU ARE SUPPOSE TO DO ONCE YOU HAVE THE SURGERY. HE SAYS HE GIVES YOU THE TOOL BUT IT IS UP TO YOU TO MAINTAIN IT.

HE TOLD ME STRAIGHT OUT ABOUT THE RISK OF THE SURGERY, BUT I HAVE RESERCHED ALL ABOUT SURGERY AND I KNOW THE RISK AND I STILL PLAN ON HAVING IT. I JUST PUT IT IN DR. MADURA AND GODS HANDS.

I RATE DR. MADURA ON A SCALE OF 1-10, I GIVE HIM A 11.
SURGICAL COMPETENCE AND BEDSIDE MANNER BOTH ARE NEEDED IN THIS SITUATION.

I found Dr. Madura very professional. His assistant Samantha was also very knowledgable about this process and helpful. She made a point of telling me to contact her if I have any questions. Dr. Madura was very clear about the risks of the surgery, such as blood clotting (he said he would want me to stop my birth control pills after the surgery to reduce that risk).

I'll be able to update further with more interaction.
