My sister Cathy had the GB surgery in August 2001 and, to make a long story short, is in dire need of a reversal. She went from over 300 lbs and is down to around 90 now, literally starving to death thanks to the butcher job she received from Dr. Skogerson. Not only did he not follow up on her after the surgery, it was recently discovered that he completely botched her procedure and it was done upside-down. She is undergoing surgery in a few days (Oct. 2006) to have part of her stomach removed in an effort to save her life. She has spent the last two years in and out of the hospital getting blood transfusions, b-12 injections, and a host of other treatments to assist her in basically surviving. She is not the same person anymore and has lost the will to live. Did I mention that she has had to eat all of her meals lying down? Cathy is one of many hurt by this man but I cannot speak on behalf of the others, Please make sure you have researched your doctor before you have this done. I paid to have a report run on Dr. Skogerson and it was unfavorable. In addition, her own family physician advised her not to allow Skogerson to do it. He was the only one her insurance would pay for and she was desperate. Don't gamble with your life, it's not worth it.

When I saw Dr. Skogerson in December 2002, I was immediately confortable talking to him. He explained the pro's and cons of the surgery, and answered all of my questions. His office staff was wonderful, and when the time came for insurance authorization, Sharon was fantastic. I was approved with the first request. I had a little side-trip in January 2003, when Dr. Skogerson took out my Gallbladder with the Laproscope. He did a fabulous job, and I returned to work 1 week later.

In February I finally got my surgery date, 7/22/03 and I started the count down to the losing side.

On July 22,2003 I officially crossed over to the other side, and started my journey to losing. I weighed 267#, and my BMI was 46. The staff at Carson Tahoe Hospital was OK, not exceptional by any means, but certainly acceptable, and I was discharged on July 24th. I returned to work 3 weeks after surgery, and have felt fabulous since.

For the past year, I have learned to eat, with limitations, focussing on protein first, and eliminating concentrated sugar foods from my diet. A few bites now satisfies me, where in the past I would have "eaten the whole thing".

Words can't express the total appreciation to Dr. Skogerson for providing me with this tool to become a permanant weight loser.

Today, August 28, 2004 I weight 135# and my BMI is 23, exactly 1/2 of what I started out with.

Dr. Skogerson is the best in my book. Thank You from the bottom of my heart.

Dr. Skogerson is a very caring, concerned and supportive person. He did not make you feel ashamed of your condition as many doctors do. I have become more impressed with him as time goes on. He listens attentively, puts a comforting hand on your shoulder and makes you feel important. Dr. Skogerson's staff are the nicest group of caring people I have ever met. Every one of them are very educated about morbid obesity. I can't think of a thing that I like the least about him execpt he has a prettier color grey hair than I do.

He will tell you like it is, even if he has to tell you that you are too great a risk for surgery. He places just as much emphasis on aftercare as on pre surgery education and screening. You are sent to a battery of testing and education including pulmonary and psyciatric screening. The best part of this type of the care for me is their suppot group meetig. I have been to four since March and have learned so much there. We all share our questions and concernes and occasinally cry. I would say he is on of the best surgeons in the country. His bed side manner is wonderful and from what I hear about his surgical competance from other patients he is very good.

The only thing that anoyed me was that I am one of those people who make up my mind and want to get things done now. Dr. Skogerson and his staff made me take my time. They were so cautious as to cancel my gastroscope and endoscope for a month because the foot surgeon had done unexpected surgery on both my feet and they did not want to risk infection. The because my secondary insurance company was fighting us I had to delay to save up a down payment. I was very disappointed but am glad in the long run because I had more time to think it over and realize my instincts were right. Also it gave me many opportunities to talk to others about the procedure. I brought several others to this surgery by sharing my knowledge.

Well I wish all I had to say was good stuff. I missed an appointment, actually it was the second time. Very early on, before I had surgery I forgot one also. Now one of my big symptoms from depression is forgetfullness. I had even talked to them about it and was told flat "It is your responsibility to make it to the appontments, We don't make reminder calls" Now surprisingly enough, they will call you the afternoon you miss the appointment and remind you that there is still a $25.00 fee for missing the appontment and insist on making another. I would think that the 125.00 or so they get for an appointment that you do make is better than the missed appointment fee. But what do I know, I keep forgetting don't I. When Dr. S's office called to remind me of the missed app. I told them I wanted to hold off on making the next one since I had a lot of stress at home and didn't want to risk missing another one. I was reminded that I contracted to make followup appointments. I said, that I knew that but wanted to wait before rescheduling. Several days later I got a letter from Dr. S. dropping me as a patient. I know wonder if they really do care that much for the patient or if the dollar bill is the important thing to them........

I first meet Dr. Skogerson in September of 2002 at a support group meeting in Hawthorne, NV, which is 125 miles from Carson City, where he has his practice. I had my initial appointment with him on 7 October 2002. I was impressed that he would take time to come that distance with his office staff to visit and talk to a small group. I was impressed with not only him, but with his office staff as well. He was very up front with every thing that he talked about. He had a very well done video which was shown. His office staff is very knowledgable and efficient. I was put through a serries of appointments with cardiologists, pulmonologists and pyschologist. I was scheduled for surgery on March 18, 2003. I weighed 437 pounds pre-op. His aftercare program is very good. I was seen at 1 week, 1 month and at 3 months post-op. To date, June 24, 2003, I have lost 101 pounds and I feel great.

<P Align="left">Dr. Skogerson reminds me of the typical overage California Surfer, But that's OK by me. He is tops very knowledgeable, and truly feels for his patients. He tells it like it is, you may not want to hear it, but when he tells you it is either surgery or die after a while you get the picture. I have recommended him to a few of my friends and my spouse too. That is just how confident I feel in putting my life in his hands.

His staff is good and with return calls promptly and always have good advice or the answer to your questions.

The biggest draw back is the fact that his office is extremely busy and you may have to wait months for a surgery date. i.e. This is February and we are looking at July?

My first impression was one of that Dr. Skogerson is a VERY thorough surgeon. Very professional, knowledgable and concerned. That pretty much remained the same up to and including my surgery date. His office staff is impeccable. Professional, friendly, and knowledgable. If I had to say anything remnotely negative about Dr. Skogerson, it would probably be that he appeared to keep himself at a 'distance.' However, that TOTALLY changed after the surgery. He became even more caring, more compassionate. Totally nice.
His aftercare program is comprehensive and totals about 2 years.
When Dr. Skogerson was addressing the risks of surgery, well, he couldn't have come across as anymore SERIOUS about the topics. No jokes, no smiles. He wanted things to be as crystal clear as possible. Reiterated previous issues about the numerous body system failure possibilities.
I would have to rate him overall as absolutely wonderful. The best. I truly believe his surgical competence and beside manner go hand in hand...I couldn't have asked for anyone better.

I like Dr. Skogerson right off the get go. I felt he cared about the seriousness of my obesity and was very forthcoming in all the risks involved with a surgery of this nature.
My opinion/impression has only improved. I hold Dr. Skogerson in the highest regard.
Dedicated and professional. Very caring and concerned.
Nothing.
Patients should understand he is a retired Military Doctor and some of that does flow over to his practice. Just remember he's human the same as you and me.
Dr. Skogerson is fanatical about aftercare. I have had some minor complications with my WLS and he has never failed me in taking care of the problem
Dr. Skogerson was extremely forthcoming with what risks are/were involved with the WLS.
On a scale of 1-10, I'd rate him about a 15

Both his surgical competence and bedside manner are GREAT!!
