I'm a new post-op of Dr. Skogerson's (surgery was 12/6/02). I researched and talked to other doctors and then went with Dr. Skogerson after meeting him. He's really easy to talk to, which is very important to me (I tend to stumble over my thought and words when nervous) Him and his staff made me feel very comfortable (even when I drove them a little crazy!). I would recommend him to anyone having surgery.
I live 230 miles from Carson and had to travel alot, his staff was very helpful in my scheduling. Then after surgery when I was finally home and was very nervous, I was able to call him with my concerns. Not only did he calm me but he checked up on me the next day. It's good to know that they are there for anything that arises ( Cathy his nurse has been a big help too!)
As far as aftercare, It's been stessed how important it is, I'm looking forward to my next group meeting. Overall, Great Doc and Staff.

My first impression of Dr. Skogerson was not a good one. But I think it's only because he referred to overweight people as unhealthy, unhappy, and mobidly obese. Maybe it's because I didn't want to hear that. However, throughout my process, he has proven to be a very kind, thoughful, humorous man. He cares about every one of his patients. That's evident in his support group meetings each month. His entire staff shows at each meeting.

Dr. Skogerson and his staff have been extremely helpful through every step of this process. My first visit was in Dec 01. My husband Phil and I have both had the surgery by him and he was with us every step of the way. Phil experienced some complications with an abscess in his infection and then a kidney stone and Dr. Skogerson was extremly helpful and concerned the entire time. I would recommend this office to everyone. I live in Sparks and there are doctor's closer but I would make the drive to Carson City for the excellent care.

I have had a very good experience at Dr. Skogerson's office. He is very pleasant. Jonathan his PA is wonderful. Sharon is great at getting approval from your insurance company. It took me 3 months to get approval from my insurance company because they required so many test. Sharon took everyone of my phone calls and was always pleasant and answered all of my questions. Overall, the office staff is great. I highly recommend Dr. Skogerson.

03/11/02 - This was my first appointment with Dr. Skogerson and his staff. They were friendly, helpful and extremely knowledgable. After meeting with the staff about insurance, Dr. Skogerson and his PA come out and meet several of us at once, reviewing their credentials, how they got started in this field and what their procedure is. He answered questions easily and thoroughly. Then you are taken back, weighed, have your pictures taken and then interviewed either by the doctor or his PA, both if there's time. They review your history, and potential additional health problems you may have and how they'll be addressed. Dr. Skogerson came in and was very friendly and thorough, and extremely non-judgmental. After making some recommendations on health issues I should have checked, he turned me over to his nurse who, with their scheduler, starts setting up appointments and referrals for you.

I was originally considering duodenal switch, but Dr. Skogerson and his staff gave solid reasons why I should reconsider not only the duodenal switch, but consent to an open RNY instead of laparoscopically. Dr. S can perform the open surgery in under 50 minutes where lap can take up to 6 or more hours - not good. You must commit to a minimum 2 year aftercare program and attend monthly meetings. You are also given a folder of materials to review and must come back in 30 days to take a little test on the material. This ensures you are knowledgable about the procedure you are having and what your responsibilities are before and after the surgery.

I would rate Dr. S and his staff a 10+. They are wonderful, easy to work with and thorough.

My only suggestion would be to ask about how long the process can truly take when you're trying to get approved for surgery. I initially thought I could get through the process in less than 30 days, but in actuality, it will be approximately 3 months until surgery date (unless I have any further complications).

I had my first appointment with Dr. Skogerson on Feb. 18, 2002 and was very impressed with him and his staff. He is very thorough and also very knowledgeable, again, as well as his staff. I enjoyed his P.A., John, and am looking forward to working with all of them through this exciting yet scary ordeal! I am scheduled for a couple of things to get a clean bill of health (as clean as can be expected) as well as waiting for insurance approval. This made me feel that he was ensuring my health in all aspects. I don't mind waiting for surgery because he is doing everything he can to ensure that it is a success. All of my questions were answered with a smile, even. The risks and benefits were explained in great detail, he even had a model that his nurse made for him that helped me to visualize the surgery. I feel that they will do everything they can to make this journey as easy as possible. I will let you know more as I find out more.

The first time I met Doc he was a tad bit cocky, but over the year so many things changed.

As for now, I believe he is the "angel" and he has changed so many people's lives.

He is most definitely a perfectionist and very, very cautious.

His staff is marvelous.

I like everything about him ------- 100%.

He will follow me throughout my first year and a half and probably will continue to follow me for my Barrett's Esphogus which is the result of chronic GERD.

Dr. Skogerson and his staff provide a support group.

He and his staff addressed ALL the risks and made sure I understood there were no guarantees.

If I had to place a rating on him, I would say he was a definite "10" or 100% You could not ask for a more competent surgeon.

Dr. Skogerson is great in all areas ----- he is totally competent and has a good bedside manner as well.

My first impression of Dr. Skogerson, was truely amazed at the amount of time, and true sensitivity he and his entire staff have for the Morbidly Obese world. My impression has only gotten better as he has me undergo tests to ensure my health before, during and after surgery.

Dr. Skogerson's staff has been extremely professional, sensitive, and on the ball.

The only thing I don't like and it has nothing to do with Dr. or staff is that it takes so long and insurance makes us go through all these hoops to stay alive!

Be prepared for Dr. Skogerson to check over everything.

Aftercare is extremely important not only to Dr. Skogerson but to his staff and they help you to understand how important it is for you as well.

Dr. Skogerson has a structured after and before care program. He has support group meetings, phone lists and more.

Dr. Skogerson does a presentation with you and a group your very first visit. He explains the surgery with a visual model, goes through the different stages of surgery and explains the risks and answers any questions you or your family may have throughout the entire process.

EXCELLENT! EXCELLENT!

I'll have to update you on the competence and beside manner but so far, his competence is tremendous and office manner is supportive and caring.
