Richard Benavides Bariatric Surgeon M.D.

rnI first met Dr Benavides when I went to his free seminar in Richardson Texas. I had actually thought that I was going to chose a surgeon in Fort Worth however I was very impressed with him upon attending the seminar. He was upbeat and positve. He gave a very through and detailed explaination with video that showed the procedure from beginning to end. When in his office and before and after surgery he has been very attentive and supportive. rnThe office staff has been kind, supportive and willing to answer any questions I have had.rnAs of yet ( a month after surgery) I have not had any complaints about Dr. Benevides. rnDr. Benevides stresses the importance of a structured aftercare program which includes support groups. The only problem I have had is finding a support group in my area.rnDr. Benevides explained all risk of surgery in the first seminar and then in the mini seminar he gave to myself and the other patients he was doing surgery on the same day mine was scheduled. At this moment in time I would have to rate Dr. Benevides at the top of the list and the cream of the crop where seminars, explainations, risks, surgery and aftercare are concerned. I am a nurse and have worked with many doctors and I can honestly say that not only is Dr. Benevides surgically competent but his bedside manner is superb.rn

I liked Dr. B. he was very nice and informative. His office staff were all very nice. I would say that he does not require you to come in for the first post surgery visit untill 6 weeks. And I am in a new pilot program that he has set up where I have a NP to be my contact person then I only see him after a year. Of course I guess if I really need him I could contact him instead of the NP. I understand that The LAP BAND is all he does rnso he has a complete program with clinic and consulting team and insurance office that work with his patients. I feel that surgical competence is the most important in my care, but it is also nice to have a Dr. with a good bed side manner. Dr. B. has both in my opinion.

He is very nice and understanding.rnHis staff is very professional and outgoing.rnThe first appointment with Dr. B is approximately two hours long. You go in and meet with a staff member that has been banded and she answers alot of the eating questions. She also tells you her experiences with the band. Then you go into meet with the Dr. Dr. B was great, he was non judgmental about my weight. He explained the procedure thoroughly and all of the risks. He has a great bedside manner and is a very competent surgeon. rnrnI just read the note below regarding negative things to say, but hey if my statements below are \"less informative or suspect\" then tough it is the truth.

I worked with Dr. Garwood to get qualified for the surgery and then I traveled to Dallas, Texas to have the surgery. The first time that I met Dr. Benavides I felt very comfortable with him. The office staff was just a hoot. They made me feel very comfortable when I first arrived. The assistant in his office explained to me in great detail the procedure and aftercare. Overall I think that Dr. Benavides and his staff rates A-1. I would recommend him to anyone that needs a surgeon. His bedside manner and surgical competence was great

Very straight forward, to the point, kind, and had a very understanding and calm manner.
Office staff has been very friendly and very eager to answer all questions and give great advise.
I have no complaints for either.
I would recommend both Doctor and staff over and over again.
Dr. Benavides was very informative at my preop visit had lots of helpful literature.
I rate him a 10! Everything so far about him and his staff has been complimentry.

First let me start out saying that the Band Surgery was my 9th surgery. I have had infertility, sleep apnea, and cancer surgeries. So, I have a lot of experience being a patient. I am also a Medical Technologist, we are those people who perform the tests on your blood. I have worked in hospitals for over 15 years. I had my band surgery 2 years ago. At the time Dr. Benavides was practicing in College Station and Richardson TX. However, my insurance would only pay for the surgery at a hospital, so instead of driving 15 mintues to Richardson, I had to drive 3 hours to College Station. The doctor has a wonderful bedside manner which is very important to me. And, at the time, he had performed more band surgeries than any other doctor in the ara. The fact that he had been doing this for a long time made him the only doctor that I would have chosen. He is definately an A+ doctor.
I do not know if he still does these surgeries at the College Station hospital, but here is my opinion of the hosptial: The operating room staff was very attentive and kind. As was the X-ray and respiratory staff. Again, a great experience. I had to stay overnight, and the nursing staff on the ward was what I have come to expect--overworked and underjoyed. I would say the stay in the hospital was an average experience. I have had worse, and I've had much better. You would call the nurse to go to the restroom (as they had to remove the leg massgers) and call them again and again. After 45 minutes of them not coming, I finally just started removing the massagers and unplugging my IV and taking myself to the restroom. One night nurse thought that I didn't need pain medication, and should just go back to sleep.
I really wish that I could have done the day surgery route, but since the insurance required the overnight stay, I had to stay.
In 2004 I had a scope procedure done to check my band and figure out why I had such bad heartburn. I had this done at the Richardson Surgery Center. This was a good experience also. I also have had a fill at the center and the staff is very accomadating.
