I had heard through many people that he was very blunt and did not have a nice personality. So I was very nervous going to meet him the first time, but once I seen him in the exam room my fears eased greatly. He was blunt and to the point, but he knew what he was talking about and answered my thoughts and questions before I had a chance to think them up. He treated me with respect and dignity. I was really on the fence post about surgery until I met him. He made me feel much more confident. He was very stern about taking care of your self before and especially after surgery. He made sure I was aware of the complications and that it is not an easy choice or road to travel. I am getting ready to sumbit my insurance for approval. Wish me luck!

Dr. Spier provided great service to me. He has a dry sense of humor and expects his plan to be followed rigidly. Don't be surprised if he seems a bit abrupt and "to the point" with you. He wants all his patients to realize that, not only will you be having this MAJOR surgery, but you need to comply with a complete lifestyle change. I would recommend Dr. Spier to anyone, but if you can't take the heat, move somewhere else. My husband and Mother in Law did not like the way they were greeted by Dr. Spier after my surgery, but I did not let them know what to expect from him. He reminds me of a very strict military man!!

Dr. Spier is a very nice, funny, upfront person who knows what he is talking about. His office staff is very nice also from receptionist who greeted me, to his nurse Robin, to Jan the insurance person, who also called me right away when she found out that I needed additional evaluations because of my insurance.
I was impressed that Dr. Spier is with you from day one till 4 years out. That is comforting to know.

HE WAS AND STILL IS AN AWESOME DOCTOR. HE'S VERY UP FRONT WITH YOU AND LET'S YOU KNOW IF YOUR SCREWING UP OR NOT, HE'S VERY STRAIGHT FORWARD AND SO AM I, I THINK THAT'S WHAT MADE ME CHOOSE HIM OVER THE OTHER DOCTOR'S MY HUSBAND AND I INTERVIEWED.
HIS STAFF MEMBERS ARE WONDERFUL ALSO, ROBIN, HIS NURSE HAD THE SURGERY DONE ALSO BY DR. SPIERS AND HIS WIFE JAN DEALS WITH THE INSURANCE COMPANIES. SO TO ME IT GAVE ME A NICE FAMILY OR CLOSENESS FEELING.
THERE'S NOTHING YET THAT I HAVE FOUND THAT I DON'T LIKE ABOUT HIM OR HIS STAFF.
HE IS VERY BIG ON AFTER CARE AND MAKING SURE THAT YOUR DOING WHAT YOUR SUPPOSE TOO. THE OTHER GOOD THING IS THAT IF YOU HAVE A QUESTION YOU WANT ANSWERED RIGHT AWAY, ROBIN CAN ALSO ANSWER QUESTIONS AND IT'S REALLY NICE BECAUSE SHE'S BEEN THERE.
I HAD ACTUALLY RESEARCHED THE SURGERY AND THE PRO'S AND CON'S OF IT BEFORE I WENT TO SEE HIM, SO I TOLD HIM ABOUT THE RISKS, HE WAS IMPRESSED.
I WOULD RATE HIM AND HIS STAFF ON A SCALE FROM 1-10 A 15.
I THINK BOTH BEDSIDE AND SURGICAL COMPETENCE ARE GREAT. HE'S BEEN DOING THIS SURGERY FOR OVER 20 YRS. I JUST CALLED THE OFFICE AND STARTED ASKING QUESTIONS AND THEY WERE MORE THAN HAPPY TO ANSWER THEM. YOU CAN'T FIND A DOCTOR THAT'S BEEN DOING THIS SURGERY AS LONG AS HE HAS AND NOT HAVE SOMEONE PASS AWAY, IT'S A MAJOR SURGERY. PLEASE DON'T LET THAT DISCOURAGE ANYONE FROM SEEING HIM. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM.

Dr. Spier was very direct and straight to the point...sugar-coated nothing, which I think is good! I felt extremely confident with this surgeon. I have a history of DT and anyone with a history of deep vein clot, Dr. Spier inserts a vena cava filter to that there is no complications with a clot breaking off and traveling to your hear/lungs. This was a great assurance to me. OFfice staff is good. Everybody is very knowledgeable. Jan, the insurance lady, is far from personable, but you don't deal her that much. Robyn, Dr. Spier's nurse is extremely helpful. I really ca't think of anything that I didn't like about Dr. Spier. He is extremely rigid....but that's a good thing. AFter is extremely important. Dr. Spier says that if you do what he says, you shouldn't have any problems. Dr. Spier does a follow-up program for 4 years. OIn a scale of 1-10, I would rate Dr. Spier a 9.5. His surgical competench is impecable.

My first impression of Dr Spier was a good one, once I got passed my fear. I was so nervous and he put me at ease. He is a down to earth, no nonsense man who cares alot about his patients and their well-being. His office staff is the same way and are always there when you need anything. Dr Spier can be brutally honest but, he never points out a problem without telling you how to fix it. I think the thing I liked least about him was that he never sugar coated anything but at the same time, that's what I liked best. He is also very funny. He has an excellent after-care program. You follow up with him at no cost for 4yrs. (He might've changed it but that's how it used to be.) You have regularly scheduled visits where he reviews your progress and offers tips to improve, if needed. He gives you lists of what you should and should not eat. He is very thorough with your vitamins and why you need them. He has a support group that meets once a month. Dr Spier not only addressed the risks of surgery but took the time to calm my specific fears. I would give him the highest rating because not only is he a great dr. but, in my opinion, he saved my life! I think he's a wonderful human being and would recommend him to anyone looking into having a gastric bypass. I think that his bedside manner and his sugical competence are both top-notch!

Rocommended by a military hospital. Overtime I felt more confident about his abitilies as a surgeon. I completely trust his abilities. The staff was very professional and top notch. There was no negative feelings I had about Dr Spier. He is a people surgeon which means he takes time with his patients and is concern about anything that might be going on in his patients life that may affect their recovery. He is a good surgeon and honest with his patients. He gives you the facts. The aftercare he always follows up on. I have had follows ups with for over 4 yrs and no have been at any extra cost. There is also a support group in which he attends to answer any questions that may come up. Yes there is an aftercare program. The risks was explained in full detail as well as providing a booklet about gastric stomach bypass along with drawings to show you what he would be doing while proforming the bypass. I rate Dr Ronald Spier number 1 being the worst Dr. and number 10 being the best Dr for the procedure. My rating is a 10. I feel surgical competence and bedside manner go hand and hand. There both important.

I thought he was pretty straight forward kind of guy and I liked that about him. No "sugar coated" (can't have that anymore anyway!)
I have only met him once so I don't have anything to base this question on.
Staff are very nice and the insurance person (Jan) seems to know her stuff.
The area.
Don't expect him to hold your hand but he will answer your questions honestly and he makes you feel like you are important.
He is very insistant about the after care (4 years)
From what he says and everything my friend told me, it is.
He told me about the risks but was VERY confident that I shouldn't have any problems.
I think, so far, I would rate him an 8.
I think that surgical competency is the better of the two.
