I had my consultation with Dr Smoot on August 8th 2003. I can not say enough good things about the Doctor and his staff. He is one of the most caring and informative Doctors I have ever met. He took the time to answer all my questions and answer all of my friends questions as well. He made sure we understood the answers. He also told us his patients become like family to him and he really cares what happens to them. He is very upfront about the risks of surgery and the problems he has encountered in the past. He also is VERY STRICT about aftercare and says if you can not follow the program as they have it set, you can go home now! They KNOW their program works and want people to succeed. I feel very blessed and safe in his hands and would recommend him without reservations. His staff was organised and very helpful. The office was very obese friendly, nice big couches instead of little tiny chairs with arms. This group is a winner!

My first impression of Dr. Smoot was that he was very honest. He put everything on the table and explain anything I felt I need to know about the surgery.
I also love the office staff. They where able to tell me the steps I need to take for my insurance. Which I found is what people don't understand.
I am one week out of surgery and I had no pain when my staples came out. That was a big fear. He made sure he stressed that we are to make health choices. That the tool he gave use to work with doesn't work by itself.
I found him and the staff very pleasent and I am glad that I chose him has my doctor.

Dr. Smoot is a straight forward person. He told it like it was going to be..and he was correct. He is also a really nice man. The staff at the bariatric center is a caring group of individuals. The support groups and after care is wonderful. On a scale of 1 to 10 I would give him a 10. Dr. Smoot was a great surgeon...I'd do it again in a minute!

Dr Smoot has been forthcoming and yet concerned about your health and well being before and after surgery. The staff is excellent and offers alot of support, knowledge and patience for those of us who are not at all patient in the process...lol.

I believe Dr. Smoot is a very capable, experienced Surgeon. His office staff has been very helpful and has helped me every step of the way. Dr. Smoot and his staff have been very upfront with me about what to expect and about the major changes in the future. They explain very clearly that this is not the answer but just a tool for me to work with.

I have had my initial visit with Changing Lives Through Bariatric Surgery and was so impressed. Our first contact was with Barbara Zink who is a tremendous woman who instantly takes away any fear one might have. Dr. Smoot is wonderful! What impressed me most was his easy going air that put you at ease immediately. He pulled no punches about the risks of surgery vs. the pros and took time with each of us to answer questions, alleviate fears and to offer honest thoughts. Through this initial meeting, I learned that having the surgery is only a small part of the whole process. What I do before, during and after is the bigger picture. Aftercare is critical and the entire program is structured to include important components of responsibility both on medical staff side and on my own side. I have a huge job ahead of me and with the tools they provide, it will become one of my strongest successes. Dr. Smoot & Dr. Miller have an excellent background and surgical history and I am truly confident about my surgical choice. I am just beginning my journey so these thoughts are ones felt from my first meeting and of course are from my own experience and research. I would urge anyone considering this surgery to avail themselves of all tools of knowledge available and research, research, research!

12/4/01: I attended my first support group meeting and wow was it great. What a tremendous group of people and also an incredible staff support. I've been very impressed with the whole practice and especially with Barbara who has been great in working with my insurance appeal and constant support.

3/11/02: I continue to be impressed by the overall care from this group. Barbara was incredible through my appeals and never faltered. I have ultimate trust in Dr. Smoot and that I'll come safely through surgery onto the other side. A very special part of this is the total aftercare program that includes exercise, diet, nutrition, medical, emotional....full gamut!

He was pleasant, matter of fact, informative. My impression hasn't changed. He is soooooo thorough!
All of the staff is great. Very considerate, pleasant, knowledgeable.

Don't know what I liked best, just the fact that he is experienced, and seems very conscientous.

Make sure you have your xxxx together, before you go. So as not to waste time.

aftercare is a BIG deal. He insisted on knowing EXACTLY what your plan is.

I think he made it clear, that it is a serious surgery, and instructions must be followed carefully.

So far......great.

surgical competence is necessary....bedside manner is a plus.
