I was very impressed with Dr. Shayani on our first visit. He was knowledgable, pleasant and really seemed to be very interested. His office staff was pleasant and informative.
I am still very impressed with Dr. Shayani and his staff. The surgical care unit at the hospital was excellent, everyone was great.. The hospital nurses in the ICU step-down left a lot to be desired.. I will tell you all about that in my profile later. I would highly recommend Dr. Shayani to ANYONE.
Dr. Shayani called me himself over the weekend following my surgery to check in.. I was so surprised! He had been out of town for a few days and wanted to make sure that I hadnt had any problems.. How cool is that??

Dr. Shayani, F.A.C.S., is a Board certified surgeon who was primarily a laproscopic stomach cancer surgeon until he was asked to start doing LAP rnys. He trained in laproscopy under one of the surgeons involved with Carnie Wilson's surgery. Until he started doing the LAP rny, Loyola only did open surgery.
I first met Dr. Shayani about a year ago when I started at the Nutrition Center. He was just recruiting people for the surgery and had not done any. To date, he has performed 12 LAP Rnys. He lost one patient who weighed 600lbs.
My husband and I both feel Dr. Shayani is caring and direct. He asked me to start watching my diet and exercising. He said patients who start the program before the surgery do better during and after. He told me to wean myself off coffee, soda and sugar.
I have not met his office staff yet.
Surgery was on 2-5-01. Dr. Shayani came to see me in the pre-surgical holding room and reconfirmed the type of surgery he was doing. Due to my weight loss, he was sure he could do LAP. The hospital staff at Loyola could not be better. The anesthesiologist spent a lot of time with me getting me ready for the surgery. After the surgery, Dr. Shayani came to visit me right after the Barium swallow test and then the next day when he discharged me. His bedside manner is pleasant and direct. He doesn't waste time, nor does he leave in a hurry. The benefit of a teaching hospital is that his doctors-in-training did a lot of work with me in advance getting information. This gave him the opportunity to come in fully informed.
Dr. Shayani's office staff is very friendly. They're extremely interested in the gastric bypass patients. The doctor kept me waiting awhile but was still thourough when he came in. He has seen me twice since the surgery and will see me every six weeks for a year.
3-21-01-I was hospitalized with a cellulitis. Dr. Shayani saw my name on the hospital computer and called me. he also visited twice. He was relieved to find the infection was not near the surgical site. What a caring man!

My Surgeon will be Dr. Vafa Shayani, Loyola University Health System, Maywood, IL. I tried to put him in the data base here, but your file system says he already is in the surgeon file. No he's not. Anyway, Dr. Shayani does lap RNY--proximal. He's seems very confident. He has a wonderful support team that works with him as far as diet, post-surgery care, structured aftercare program, etc. I have only seen him once, but he has always returned my calls--talking to me a length about my concerns. His secretary does her business--not too friendly on the phone--but not rude either. I will rate him more precisely after the operation--Jan. 22, 2001. Once I decided I wanted the operation--things seemed to go very quickly. I think he is an experienced lap surgeon--I just don't know how many of these lap procedures he has done.
