Baptist Health Medical Center (COE) Hospital
There were at least 2 nurses which had previously had the bariatric surgery so this was very helpful to know that at least some of the staff knew first hand what you were experiencing. What was really impressive was that they were able to accommodate my roommate. We live 3 1/2 - 4 hours away and didn't want to incur the additional expense of a hotel. Since they could not guarantee a private room, they were able to block the bed in my semi-private room which allowed her to sleep in the bed next to me and help (when I could get her to wake up) when I needed to get up for bathroom breaks. My overall view of this hosptial was nothing but one positive experience after another. All went very well.
I do think it is a good hospital. A couple of my nurses did not inspire confidence in their abilities, but I know this is everywhere. This hospital is definitely more concerend about the patient than I have ever found St. Vincent Infirmary to be (my mother was there a few times). The patient care techs were all excellent with their duties. My husband was there with me to assist me if my needs were not being handled efficiently. Only a couple of minor concerns--regarding communciation really, but I would recommend that patients always have someone stay with them no matter where you go to address the questions/concerns you may not think of (since you're drugged or uncomfortable most of the time!).
This review was written on 02/27/2005 I was a private pay patient. I liked the hospital just fine the only complaints I have are: they were way over loaded with patients- I was on that ROCK HARD recovery room bed for SEVEN hours waiting for a bed on the floor that I was to go to. Also I didn't like having a semi-private room, I couldn't leave the pee-pee collecting/measuring basin in the pot, I was SO hot all the time, thank GOD I had a personal fan. And most of all, my hubby couldn't stay in there with me at night due to having a female roomate, he had to sleep down the hall in the ICU waiting room. I started requesting a private room in the pre-op room and to everyone from there on out and never got one, yet while doing my walking down the halls and back everyday I saw a couple private rooms empty - must have been a staffing problem. The nurses were great, very fast to bring me something for nausea, and for pain after they unhooked the PCA pump. All except the semi-private room and the 7 hour recovery room stay, It went great!! I would use this hospital again.
The pre-op, operating room, recovery room, and intermediate care rooms I was in were absolutely fantastic. It was when I was moved to a "normal" room on the bariatric floor that things went downhill. They were completely overstaffed to the point that my IV beeped for over two hours at one point as I waited for pain meds. (Luckily I wasn't in that much pain!) The staff here were, however, excellent. The problem was the understaffing.
