Baptist Hospital of Pensacola Hospital
My only complaint is on a nurse in the recovery room. I had sleep apnea at the time of surgery. Afterwards I was really out of it because of the anesthesia. I was moaning a lot... not because of pain... just moaning. The nurse told me that she refused to put up with me and that I was being a pain in her ass. The thing is... she wasn't my nurse. If I could have gotten out of that bed I would have kicked her in the teeth.
I love Baptist. I am an employee owner, and I take that seriously. We take our care of you seriously, when you come here, you are in the best hands. I would trust my children with any of the nurses here. And if a problem does arise, we take it very seriously to correct that situation and the source and ensure you are very satisfied after that as well.
I was generally disapointed in the nursing care. Of course, as in every situation, there were great people and people who were not so great. Bariatric rooms were doaled out in a haphazard way (I was first case and got a regular room-not bariatric). When I asked to be moved when there were discharges, I was told the rooms were assigned to new patients. After speaking to the nurse manager, I was moved into a bariatric room. Denise, Mary, Ginny in periop and Desere was dolls. I know the pain meds are given as directed by the physician, but if it isn't cutting it, then they need to pick up the phone and ask the doctor for new orders. They didn't, I did and the MD called in another order for meds. Certainly NOT protocol. NEVER should an inpatient call a physician's office for pain medication. Not once was my dressing changed even though it was bloody and wet.. a breeding ground for infection. Had a vein blow and was not noticed until Asst. Nurse Manager came in to see if things were ok (after speaking to her earlier)There were ants on the nite table in my room and they seemed to be doing some construction in the room next to me. Very noisy with moving furniture and construction tools. Discharge planning was poor. Now I know why someone is asked to stay with you. You need them there to help you and speak for you. One male nurse I had was very smug and flip when he found out I was talking to the asst. nurse manager. I asked him a question and he said "well, I don't know.. go ask Denise.. you were talking to her". Again, not everyone was so crass, but enough to make me feel I was getting in their way. I couldn't wait to leave and take care of myself. I was dissapointed.
Baptist needs to retrain some of their employees to adapt a "can do" attitude instead of immediately saying no or ignoring your needs. At my 1st post-op visit, other patients who had the surgery at the same time as me said the same thing so I am not over reacting. This may sound funny, but it was almost as if I was discriminated against since I didn't weigh as much as most bariatric patients. I felt a "do it yourself attitude".
