Baptist Hospital of Pensacola Hospital
Unfortunately there always is one nurse that a patient will have that makes you wonder why they chose nursing. I feel that the nursing staff - (and I mean only a select few) need to re-evaluate their decision to be a nurse. Also, they need to listen to their patients. If they have a concern, address it - don't ignore it. I had alot of excellant nurses and even knew a few of them. That helped with the assurance that I knew I was in good hands. I do recommend having someone there with you , maybe not at all times but for long periods of times. I'd have to say the 2nd day was the most I needed someone when Fluids were being pumped in me and my catheter was out - it was nice having someone walk me to the bathroom so I didn't have to bother the nurses. I know the policy at my hospital is if a patient ask for pain medicine you have to give it within 15 minutes and if you can't, you better find someone that can. Well the shortest amount of time I waited was 30 minutes and the longest was 1 1/2 hrs. There was a time I needed to go to the bathroom and just needed the SCD's taken off - I waited 15 minutes w/o a response, so i recalled and the nurse asked if I could wait to go to the bathroom. I had to be a bit forward and tell her that it had already been 15 minutes. So better communication throughout the staff is definitely needed but really being a nurse I knew what was standard care. Well some days I just didn't get it. So if you don't know what standard of care is please make sure you read the Patient Bill of Rights book that they give you upon admission.
While doing my pre op test I was VERY impressed with Baptist. However after dealing with a few bad nurses during my stay in the hospital, my opinion lowered. Best way to put it, some nurses were WONDERFUL, some were terrible! Jared, Heather and Neal ( I think that was his name! lol) You rate top ten in my book!
This may come across as real negative, but it's not really. Just noting the experiences.
All my nurses were great except one older lady who may need to think about retiring or keep her negativity to herself and not disclose it to the patients.
My IV wasn't taking care of for about 8 hours when I was letting them know my hand was extremely achy and cold - something about potassium leakage. The vein was blown, a new IV put in and about 9 hours after that - someone brought me a heater which was no longer needed.
PLEASE NOTE: In the whole scheme of things... I was VERY PLEASED with the staff and my stay.
