Unbelievable, wonderful, caring, supportive, honest, no-nonsense (well, maybe a little nonsense...he has a great sense of humor!) physician. I was impressed by his manner, knowledge, and caring. I would recommend the OCC team to anyone who is seriously considering any type of weight loss program.

I was always treated with respect, and always able to reach someone if I had a question or problem.

All the staff at the New England Medical Center Obesity Consult Center are helpful and caring. Dr. Shikora is one of the best in the business and I feel 100% confident in his abilities. He spent a great deal of time fully describing the surgery, answering all my questions, telling me things I didn't think to ask and being available at Support Group meetings (along with most of the staff) to answer our questions and offer support and honestly talk about the risks.

The Obesity Consult Center is very well established and Dr. Shikora does about 5 surgeries a week. (He's done over 800 open rny's and almost 100 laps. I'm having a lap). They have an extensive support systems with group meetings for every stage of the game.

The only down side I had with OCC was their time requirements. Because they are so busy it can take anywhere from 4-8 months to get a surgery date. However, I put this time to good use and started to modify my eating habits in preparation for surgery and because they require you to lose some weight before the operation. (I surprising lost 30 pounds). I also used this time to make sure I was making the right decision for me. I ended up being happy I wasn't rushing this major decision and now feel 100% confident in my choice.

I would recommend the Obestity Consult Center and Dr. Shikora to all those in the Boston area interested in this surgery or if not they are still the best place around to deal with obesity through other non-surgical methods.

Dr. Shikora and New England Medical's Obesity Consult Center are A+ in my book.

I can't say enought about Dr. Shikora and the program at NEMC in Boston. The program that they have you go through is long and some may not like that. But by the time my surgery day came I was so well prepared mentally and physically. I knew what was in store for me because I attended the groups and all of my appoinments with the councelor. Dr. Shikora is such a kind man and all of the office staff there are wonderful. Even my husband coments every time he goes how great they all are.
He addresses all of the risks, he offers both lap and open, the after care is very well structured and I would recomend the program at NEMC to everyone that lives in our area.
Thanks Dr. S.

My first impression of him that he is very competent and knowlegeable. I am impressed with the whole program at New England Medical CenterThe staff and all the after-care programs. The only negative so far is the time to get a surgery date.I started with them in Oct.99 and I am now finally scheduled in May. A bit frustrating.

Dr. Shikora runs a very well-organized, well-planned program providing both pre-op and post-op support. His staff includes a medical doctor for post-op care, a psychologist, and at least two nutritionists, all of whom are available for questions. He and his staff run monthly pre-op information sessions, monthly large-group support meetings (open to all patients), and several small support groups (limited to 8 patients) for more personal discussion.

Dr. Shikora did address the risks of surgery, including his record of fatalities. He claims a mortality rate of less than .05 percent, which is very good. He also stated that he has performed over 700 over these surgeries.

My only complaint is that the process takes a LONG TIME: generally about 7 to 9 months from the first appointment.

Not really a complaint, but you should know: He says he will REFUSE to perform the surgery on anyone who smokes or on anyone who gains weight before the surgery.

Dr.shikora is great. I was very sick right after surgery with the stomach flu...he was right there at every test with me...He got thru the whole mess without having to do surgery again.

I like the Obesity Consult clinic at New England Medical Center in Boston. They helped me get approved so my insurance paid.
When ever I have a question someone always calls me back.

I feel very fortunate to have had Dr. Shikora as my surgeon. He is confident and caring, with an excellent manner. Most importantly, he seems to truly understand the dynamics of obesity and to be a gifted surgeon and clinician.

from the first time i met with Dr Shikora he went slow and explained every part of what i would go thru and have done to me he went over the figures of being obese I felt so good talking with him and I didnt feel intimated as he is not overweight as most of my doctors are and always telling me how my weight affects me which i knew from day one and after the surgery i met him and I saw him everyday sometimes two to three times a day I would reccomend him to anyone in the united states and i would do it again if i need to but dont feel there will be any need to do it again i am down my first 25 lbs and off my oxygen and feel GREAT

My first impression of Dr. Shikora was that he was extremely knowledgable. He looked at me as a person rather than a statistic. Over time, my impression has turned to sheer admiration for this man. He is a kind and involved surgeon. Dr. Shikora's staff is remarkable. The pre-op care was incredible, I never felt alone. Post-op has been wonderful as well. I get phone calls to see how I am doing. The aftercare is crucial. There is a support group once a month for all people considering, scheduled for or having had the surgery. There are also smaller group meetings with a psychologist. The nutrition staff is wonderful, and they do not quit being by your side. This team head by Dr. Scott Shikora receives the highest rating from this patient. Every explanation from the surgery procedure to the recovery to the rest of your life has been concise, and heartfelt. Every aspect of this team is phenomenal. Thumbs up!I am 100% satisfied, and I honestly do not have one negative thing to say. Trust me on this one!
