St Lukes Hospital Hospital

St. Lukes is an EXCELLENT hospital. ALL the rooms are private and I had NO problems with visitors. The nurses and nurses aides were very attentive and came right away when I pushed the call button. The hospital was very clean and had a pleasant atmosphere. I did not have to worry about anything during my stay. None of the staff whatsoever made me feel badly in anyway, and in fact made me feel special in that they took the time to talk to me one-on-one and seemed genuinely concerned with my well-being. St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center WAS my hospital of choice, but now it is St. Lukes!

St. Luke's is good about preparing you for life outside the hospital, by having consultations with a dietician and nurse before you leave, no matter if their dietician is the one you have previously consulted or not. They give you a book about life before and after bariatric surgery, a therapy band, and guidelines for life at home after surgery. Some of their policies were kind of questionable, however. Only one person is allowed to visit the patient while the patient is in Pre-Op. Also, only one person is allowed to stay in the room with you overnight. The nurses seemed to be unwilling to make accomodations for two people to stay in one room. I also had to wait a full hour before I received pain medication on two different occasions. My boyfriend and I would tell the CNAs that I needed pain meds and they would tell us that they would tell the nurse. This resulted in the above situation. St. Luke's is okay, but they still need a lot of improvement.

I had a few nurses who did not understand the bariatric patients needs and would tell me that I could start eating soon. I just chuckled and let them learn it on their own. It made me somewhat uncomfortable though, and I just reminded myself to stay patient. Dr. Oakley is very protective and writes excellent orders, so no one was ever left in the dark about what was to happen. And of course, there were one or two nurses who had handled WLS patients and were very supportive and gentle. I really had a fine stay at St Lukes.
