University of Pennsylvania. Hospital
I was treated with the utmost courtesy and professionalism by all but one of the staff. On the first night (the night of my procedure), a maintenance crew was refinishing the hallway floors using very loud equipment. During their breaks, the maitenance crew spoke very loudly about the local professional basketball team's last game. When I compained in the middle of the night to a nurses' assistant, she arrogantly responeded: "you'll just have to put up with it, they need to do their job". She was unmoved by the fact that I had just undergone surgery and was in a great deal of physical discomfort. She obviously needs additional sensitivity training. However, the entire remaining staff were excellent!
Everyone was great, especially the nurse who atteneded in the OR. She was so comforting. I was in recovery for 8 hours because my room wasn't ready, but the nurse there was great! When I finally went to my room in the ICU dept, I had another wonderful nurse. My negative experiences came when I was moved to my main room. The nurses were very busy, and I had to wait 20-45 in when I pushed the call bell. Also my floor was a mess and no one cleaned it until the day I left.
I was in for outpatient prostate surgery. It was first time EVER being operated on for anything and the staff was great. I did my research (as I am doing now for this possible Lap RNY) and found that my urologist is one of the tops on the east coast and this hospital is one of the best in the country.
I am only considering surgeons for my Lap RNY who are affiliated with HUP!
This is an awesome hospital and other than the staff being overly worked, they need to hire more nurses, I don't think you could find a better hospital. My care was awesome for the most part, very caring staff, I only had one nurse who left alot to be desired, but the rest were awesome (if not overworked), so figure I was in for 8 days, round the clock care, that is alot more good nurses and docs than just that bad one. I wouldn't go anywhere else.
I could not stress enough to the entire team that helped me with everything there, how VERY HAPPY I was with everything they were all doing for me and tolerant they were for even my visitors. I felt like I was in the most organized and well responsive place I could ever be in. I can honestly say that without a doubt this was the first time ever in my life that I could say I really didn't care if I left the day I was suppose to or not. I cannot thank this staff or hospital enough for everything they have done for me.
The nursing staff was great, but you could not get any assistance for general things like getting help to get up in the morning and cleaned up. No one came to help you shave of get cleaned up in the morning or to get you out of be. The nurse, who had limited time with me did what she could. I would ring the buzzer and ask for assistance and wait 40 minutes and no one would come. When I heard someone in the hallway, I just called for help and they would come in and give me the minimal assistance I required.
It could have been a lot cleaner. Other than giving me clean gowns and bed pads and things, there was trash all over the floor, which stayed there for much of my stay in the hospital, I don't think the floor was mopped in the 5 days that I was there. Its seemed the housekeeping people didn't think that cleaning the floor and emptying the garbage can was part of their job go figure.
