USC University Hospital Hospital
From the moment I stepped through the door at 5:00 a.m. and was greeted at the front desk to the time I was wheeled out the door to go home, each and every person we came in contact with was fantastic! I had the most wonderful, caring, and compassionate nurses (including pre-op, recovery, and floor care). Some of my special angels included: Grace (pre-op), Kaylee (recovery), Melineh, Angelina and Elva (floor nurses). Even the nursing assistants, dieticians, food service and housekeeping people were top-notch. They allowed my husband to stay with me both nights I was there and were just as caring of him as they were of me. There aren't enough adjectives to relate how highly I regard this hospital, it's staff and the services it provides. If you're lucky enough to be a patient here, you are indeed lucky.
My concerns with the hospital was that after surgery my family was not informed if I was ok or where I was at. My surgery was at 10:30 am and done at 12:30. I was in my room at 5pm. It was at 4:00 when my family asked if everything was ok and then the front desk phoned my sugeon to speak with them over the phone. When I was wheeled into my room my family was finally able to see me. I shared a room with another WLS patient who had been there for already 5 days. I did not like having to share the bathroom. The nursing staff was horrible with cleaning up the restroom after which made me not want to use it. I asked for a comode and never got it. The RN's on duty were horrible at answering the calls. Every morning the charge nurse would come in and ask how they where doing with their calling system (that let me know that they knew they had a problem) on a scale from 1 - 10. I would tell them it was a 1-2. It never got better. The nurses aids are awsome as well as the residents which helped smooth over the rest of the horrible staff. On a whole I knew that I was in good hands and the Dr K really expects a lot out of the nursing staff at the hospital as well. I would not enjoy having to go back to USC University Hospital again.
after recovery I was in a room with another lady who had her whole family there for dinner!! lol and i was in some pain but was taken care of very well after my husband asked for a new room for me because at 10:00 p.m. my roommate and her whole family of 9 had to have there night caps!! ha ha. but anyways my nurse in the dayshift was great (love you Charlene) she was always there when i need something. so i hope for all of you having surgey pray you get charlene. and a big shout out to Dr. K. thank you
I was pleasantly surprised with the level of care. It seemed a number of people from each dept were involved in my care. This was comforting because I felt nothing would be overlooked. Also, everyone that was involved with my care, from pre-op testing persomel, to post care recovery was professionl and nice! I really liked the fact that there was a white board directly below a clock. They wrote the name of the RN, PCT, & Charge Nurse on the board whenever shifts changed. This helped you know who was taking care of you. Even though I declined a breathing treatment after the 2nd one, the respitory team continued to send someone every 4 hrs in case I changed my mind. The nutritionist came back when I said I didn't really like talking to him the first time he came by. All care was provided as gently as possible. The residents & nurses had a sense of humor. If any mistakes were made during my stay, I'm not aware of them & they certainly were for lack of attention. Anyone about to use USC can feel free to contact me with specific questions.
i was in terrible pain post surgery and my mom had made a point of requesting a pca pump for me. the nurse who took care of me was slow to help me with my pain: "well, you just had surgery, you should expect a little pain," she said. every breath felt like stabbing my chest. i think you should have any medication you need as soon as possible to control pain, so that you can rest. my mom and husband waited for five hours for me to have a pain pump (i only needed it for 24 hours) before they made the 70 mile drive home that night. the next two days, i had attentive nurses who were experienced with bariactric surgery and they took excellent care of me.
