How many days off for hubby?

I'm trying to give my husband a rough estimate of how many days he'll need to take off from work to help me, after gastric bypass.  We have a 5 year old.

Typically how many days in hospital and how many days of not really being able to move very well/bed rest type situation.

I had RNY and was in the hospital for two days (and wayyyy too many repeats of SportsCenter on ESPN. I love it, but it all started to blend together.) They let me go home after a pouch leak test and once I was able to eat a sugar-free popsicle. I was able to drive a few days after that, mostly motivated by cabin fever setting in. I started my summer internship about a week after the operation. You'll be tired and sore, but it's not so bad after those first couple of days. Good luck with everything!

Welcome and Good Luck,

I am one week out of surgery.

He will need the day that you are in surgery, you may be hospitalized fot2 days after. I got out on Thursday eveneing, had surgery Tuesday morning.  I have family, so my wife went to work both those days. You cant do much, and you have hospital staff there for you. You sepnd lots of time sleeping, sitting, and just re-cuperating,  My wife came after work both days.

Your first 2 days home, he may need to be with you. my wife has the options of half days, so she has stood with me in the mroning, and then worked the second half.  We are trying to save my wife's days for when we really need to use them.

I am mobile, just bending down is a lil rough, but other than that you should be fine. I walk 3 blocks a day already.  So if you need to save days, you might want to save days for any future setbacks

Hope this helps.

I had RNY yesterday morning, and am home tonight.  My husband took the whole week off because we have a 3 year old.  He has been amazing at helping me out too.

You absolutely should NOT be having bed rest after your surgery!   Once you leave hospital, don't take to your bed - it's dangerous and counter productive!   You need to continue your regime of sip, sip, sip, and walk, walk, walk!   You can take any rest you need in a chair, as you would pre-surgery ...

I had an 11 month old and my husband went back to work the day after I got home.  I didn't have any narcotics after the day of surgery though.

You probably won't need his help after you come home, but your 5 year old might! Perhaps you can arrange play dates at a neighbor's house for a couple half-days to give you a break?

I had my surgery Wednesday morning, went home Thursday afternoon, off pain meds by Sunday, and driving by Tuesday. BUT my child was 23, so I could tell her to knock it off when she got irritating, and that's not going to work so well for you!

thank you all so much for the info.  it doesn't even seem like it'll be as bad as my c -section. (as far as the surgery goes)
i'm still pretty far out from surgery but already trying to plan.  with summer vaca coming up we're trying to decide how many days he can use for vaca and how many for helping me(my son)

If the 5 yr old goes to school, then you keep his routine and don't have hubby stay home until you get out of the hospital, when you really need him.  I only needed help for a couple of days before I shooed everyone away.
