Hunger gone after surgery?

I was told that after you have surgery, you will no longer feel hungry as that part of the stomach is removed or blocked so the hormone isn't released that makes you feel hungry. Is this accurate?

I can't speak for everyone, just myself - but for me (7 months out) I feel hunger now but it is not the same as before. It is more like an empty feeling and its easily satisfied with a minimal amount of whole foods - protein :) the sense of satiety lasts for a couple hours and if I wait too long to eat again, I will feel the hunger.

In the early months following surgery, I was never hungry at all.

I am over 3 years post-op from RNY and trust me I feel hunger. Feeling full is a different sensation and not like it was before surgery. I have read that some people feel empty as opposed to feeling hungry. The further out from surgery you are, the more you can eat and old habits and old cravings start popping up. This is always a struggle.

For the newbies, I always say, don't give into cravings, especially during your honeymoon phase. It just triggers more cravings and sets you up for stalls, keeping you away from your goal. The honeymoon phase is short and after that your body starts to adapt and losing weight is much more difficult. This phase is the time to start exercising and develop better habits. Once you are at goal, then the odd treat can be part of your lifestyle. Sadly some never reach goal because they don't make the necessary changes after surgery.

For those that have the VSG surgery, most often they have the Vagus nerve cut and they do not normally feel hunger.

Not all surgeons cut the nerve. From what I have read on the forums, it is more common in VSG as the nerve branches in the area of where they need to cut to create the sleeve.

Thank YOU!!!!! Another question for surgeon... I did read up on it and recent studies say that it does not really affect hunger so it really doesn't need to be done. And.. can cause complications!!

I inquired about this in Ottawa and they "DO NOT" cut that nerve. Sadly I never thought to ask about it until after surgery and I was starting to feel hunger a few months after surgery but not quite the same way.

I am still battling head hunger at times. :-(
