Pre-surgery diet

Hello Everyone, I'm having revision surgery from lap band to RNY on September 23rd. My Dr. is not requiring a pre-op diet except for clear liquids the day before surgery. 

I'm wondering what to do with my diet in the meantime. I'm not compelled to have last supper after last supper but I am not sure what I should do. Because I have the band I am in the habit of chewing food completely and not drinking with or around meals. However, I am eating what ever I'd like that the band can tolerate on any given day. I'm not losing or gaining. I just am wondering what I should be doing now to best prepare diet wise. Suggestions?

If you want to lose weight after your revision you will need to take in fewer calories than you burn.  You will have some weight loss with RNY due to the malabsorption that will happen for about two years. 

What works for me is no soda, no flour, sugar, cereal, bread, pastries, noodles, pasta, chips, crackers, candy, rice, potatoes, corn or other starches.  I eat dense protein, salad greens and non-starchy vegetables.  No drinking for 30 minutes after meals. 

I track all food in My Fitness Pal,  I weigh daily and take action if more than two pounds of regain.  I take my vitamins and get yearly blood work.  I exercise daily and wear a fitness tracker.  I take fiber supplements and laxatives or Imodium as needed.  Your intestines will be changed and you will most likely have constipation or diarrhea to contend with.

Weight loss all comes down to eating less than you burn.

Thank you for the input. Should I be eating this way prior to surgery as well? Just not sure what to do while I'm waiting the next couple of weeks.

Yes.  Limit your dense protein to 4 ozs per meal.  Also, drink a minimum of 64 ozs of daily fluids (ie water, skim milk, decaf coffee & tea...no sugar added but sweetener ok)...no soda.

I'm jelous.  I am on day 6 of 14 days liver shrinking diet.  I get 2 protein shakes a day, breakfast and lunch.  For dinner I can have 3 Oz of meat and 2 cups of vegies.  I have been doing really well until today.  I seem to have hit the wa.  I am soooo freaking hungry I am week and shakey.  I will not cave in and cheat, I can do this.  If I were you, I would eat light non fat or greedy foods and drink lots of water.

I'm 4 days post op and I can tell you what I did the week before that my Dr told me to do and it wasn't hard at all.  

3 protein shakes per day, No more than 8oz lean protein (I just ate chicken) per day and if I needed more than that I could have 1 serving of fruit or non starchy begs for snacks. 

I was more than satisfied with shakes and Chicken each day and a few cups of decaf hot tea.

Hi, there was no pre-op diet required where I had WLS, either.  However, medical staff politely suggested the less the digital scale read going in, the better WLS should go. That was motivation to start some of the post-op regime early.  High protein, low carb, no beverage meals were started liking the switch to healthier, preferred substitutions.  It took weeks ahead of time to collect favorite recipes for making sundaes with Greek yogurt, shakes with frozen berries, brownies with black beans, pizza crust with flattened chicken, pancakes with egg/banana, and more. some of you guys are lucky.  My two-week pre-op diet was 4-5 protein shakes a day plus SF very low-cal beverages, like water, Crystal light, tomato juice, broth. No food at all.  I was allowed SF popsicles and SF jello, though, so I ate both with abandon as they were the only "solid" things I was allowed.  I would have killed to have one meal of protein & vegetables!

Thank you for all of the input. Do they weigh you the day of surgery? The reason I ask is that I am right at a 40 BMI and was actually told by the office person that deals with insurance not to lose weight due to my coverage. They took my weight at my pre-op so if they go by that weight I should be fine, but if I lose weight I may be below 40 BMI. Don't know of that would mess up the insurance or not. Anyone know?
