Day of Surgery!

Mar 18, 2009

Well i hardly slept the night before, I was nervous but not too nervous. I woke up at 8am, took a shower blow dry ed my hair and walked upstairs where my parents greeted me in such a loving and warm way. We got in the car and headed off, i don't really remember much of the drive to the hospital i was in the zone thinking about a million and 1 things. We got to the hospital and checked in a 2 Dudley St....Wrong place...we have to check in in the Doval building in the adult surgery area. Well i got there checked in and they proceeded to watch every single person that was there before and after me go in and get prepped for their surgery, I checked in a 10:00 i was not taken into the back to be prepped until almost 2. Once in the back they started my IV then Dr. Roye and the anesthesiologist came to speak to me. They just went over the basics, I guess with these surgery's they put a breathing tube down your throat...not fun...you don't feel it cus they put it in after your knocked out and take it out before you wake up, but your throat sure feels it after wards. Well around 3 something they were ready for me so they wheeled me to the operating room, once in there they made me get on this very skinny bed, they propped my shoulders and head up, they i saw Dr. Roye and i said please take good care of me, and that was that, i don't remember anything except waking up in a lot of pain. But that didn't last long, They took me back to the recovery area and my parents got to come see me for a second then they told my parents that my oxygen was dangerously low and they were going to have to keep me over night to monitor me, so my parents had to leave, that was reallllllly sad. The nurse i had in the recovery room was a total tool, she kept coming in to speak to me then walking away while i was in the middle of a sentence to talk to her nurse friends at the desk. Just an FYI after anesthesia you get veryyyy snippy and moody so i was not in the mood to deal with her, then i noticed that i was laying flat on my back and i wanted to sit up, she came over and put my bed up, 10 seconds later I was flat on my back again lol the bed was broken, she had this other guy come and look at it, and was making me sit up fast andi kept saying, i just had stomach surgery!!!!! So they got me a new bed lol...A couple of hours later a room was ready for my upstairs, they wheeled me up and came to find out that the room had been ready for me since i got out of surgery...I was a little ticked but the morphine was stopping me from getting angry with everyone. Well here comes the fun part...all of the doctors notes for me such as pain meds, catheters etc etc were not mine, they had me in for no meds which i quickly made them correct, and they told me that i had a catheter, which i didn't there were other things like I was allergic to latex and morphine which is totally not true. So any who we never really got to the bottom of all of that. Bottom line they let me go pee and i got the pain meds lol. Throughout the night my nurses name was Meghan...she was really nice. I kept having to remind the staff that i need my pain meds every 3 hours. I didn't really sleep much. This morning my nurse was different her name was Stephanie. she was soooooo nice. One of Dr. Royes surgical team member's came to talk to me this morning, Gosh was he dreamy lol He told me that i was going to be able to go home today! WooHoo!! So then Dr. Roye came to speak to me, he said the surgery went extremely well. I then got the first glimpse of my tummy (i will post photo's later) Wow i wasn't expecting it to look so bad but yet so good! There wasn't any gauze just glue, so i could see everything. He said the glue should last about 7 days providing i don't scrub it in the shower or try to peel it off myself lol. Well after that there was yet again a big debacle about my pain meds, I'm not allowed taking Hydrocodone and they were going to send me home with it, and even the nurse was like, "its written all over her chart that she is not to have Hydrocodone" So finally after a couple of hours they prescribed me Oxycodone. Then the Nut came to talk to me, she was also a tool, I think i knew more then her about her own job. So funny thing...they lost my checkout clothing, the stuff you put in a bag that you are going to wear out of the hospital...yea they lost it. So at 6am i told them they needed to find it, cuz it was all new clothing and shoes...not one update...my mum and dad came to pick me up and i told my mum that they still had not gotten my clothes and then she disappeared then reappeared about 20 mins later with my clothes in hand...It turns out that the nurses were too lazy to go to the locker and get my clothes. But all is well. I have a follow up appointment with Dr. Roye on April 3rd at 3:45.

In regards to food, When i got upstairs to my over night room i was SO thirsty, so they gave me ice chips, i was a little apprehensive at first, but when i took that first drink, i couldn't feel anything. It didn't even feel like i had anything in my stomach, so over night i probably went through 5 or 6 cups of ice chips. I was not even the slightest bit hungry. At about 10am this morning my first meal came to greet me, it was chicken broth and apple juice. I had about 1/4 of the broth and all of the 2 oz of apple juice. It was amazing to feel so full so fast on just liquids alone.

So I'm home now, I have had about 7oz or broth and 1/2 SF Popsicle. I'm still not hungry but my stomach is making a lot of weird noises. For dinner I'm having chicken broth and SF jello...My Broth is FF, low Sodium and only 15 calories, so i have to find a way to get in more cals.

Well i hope you enjoyed reading about my adventure as much as i enjoyed living it! :)

Ill post the before pictures and the after surgery pics.
