1 day of liquids down, 34 to go

Jun 12, 2009

First day, no problemo.. .this is the start of the 2nd day and I didn't even wake up starving like I expected to. It's really strange though, getting the mental part of me to not panic. Isn't that silly? It's just amazing how much of our days are spent thinking about, preparing, and eating food. Problem is when you take that away, you disrupt your "normal" day big time, so you really kind of exaggerate what your missing... if that makes sense.

Anyways, I'll get through this. I wanted to say thanks to Jon K. for his message and those of you adding me as a friend. I'll be reading through your blogs and am always looking forward to making new friends and getting advice.

In the beginning...

Jun 11, 2009

So here goes... Any journey begins with the first step, in this case a lifelong one. I'll be having the VSG on June 25th, two weeks from now. Man am I nervous. But you know, I've lived a fat life for almost 35 years, and a change is waaaaaay overdue.

Currently I'm 327 at 6'4", and while the weight is well distributed, I'm still stuck in 3xl shirts and a size 46-48 pants. Much bigger than I want to be, and my overall health is suffering. I'm taking many meds including ones for cholestorol, blood pressure, high heart rate, and back pain. (I had back surgery in 2006 after an on the job injury) I'm praying that a major weight loss will help with all of these problems.

About me in general, I'm married to a wonderful woman and the proud father of three great kids. My son is 13 and I have twin girls that are almost 10.  I'm currently attending the University of North Texas trying to get my bachelors in Psychology over with and planning on moving onto either a Masters or Doctorate in Counseling. I hope to work in a private practice dealing with children/families somewhere close to Denton, TX.

Today is the beginning of my 2 weeks of liquids pre-surgery, followed by 3 weeks post surgery. Good lord 5 weeks is gonna be the struggle of a lifetime for me. I spent the last 3 days eating all the stuff I knew that I would miss. Yeah I know it's not healthy at all, but if its the push that gets me over the hill... who cares!? :D

If by some strange act of faith your still reading through this blog, please pray for me. I would love to find some friends in this community with a similar struggle and welcome any comments or general encouragement. I will do my best to return the favor!

Thanks for reading,
Dustin
