Question:
Has anyone had the surgery and EVERYTHING went perfect?

It seems like everyone has a hard time with nausea, vomitting, depression ect. for about the first 3-6 months, but has anyone breezed through this without any complications or problems? Kinda like Labor, some have it real bad... and others have 30 min of mild labor pains, push for a min. or so then go home the next day like it never happend. — Pamela C. I'm almost a month post-op from a Lap RNY. I had NO surgical complications at all. I did have absolutely horrible positional back pain following the surgery, but that was a pre-existing condition (bad disk), so I don't think that really counts. My stomach felt sore like someone had hit me a dozen times for about 10 days. However, no surgical incision infections, no eating problems. I was eating puree on Day 5 and I was eating all foods (except raw veggies and beef) by week 2. I went shopping on day 10 for a little while. Now, I am tired, (to be expected), and I did dump once and vomit once (both my own fault for not chewing slowly enough and making a poor food choice). But the surgery went fine. I feel very good, just kinda tired. From my perspective, I've had a perfect outcome so far.

I had absolutely NO problems. I had the DS on 5/18/00 at 494 pounds. In the hospital for 5 days. Went home, driving in 10 days, back to work in 4 weeks. Eating Taco Bell Pinto Beans and Cheese at 10 days post op. Barfed once, because I ate a tabouleh and falafil sandwich too fast (I think it was the pickled turnips) at 3 weeks post op. I had a splendid recovery. Did develop an incisional hernia this past summer after repeatedly lifting my elderly, legless father who weighed 250 pounds. But I just had that fixed. I am doing great. By the way, I just started a yoga class...I highly recommend it for people looking to improve their flexability, coordination, balance, muscle tone and getting back in touch with their bodies. I am doing things I never thought I could do. Later 'gator!

I had open RNY November 29, 2001. I have had absolutely NO problems from the surgery. I did strain my knee in the hospital moving around on the bed but other than that my hospital stay and recovery were totally uneventful. I returned to work after 2 weeks, was realeased to drive and return to work at 12 days post-op. I returned to work full time and haven't looked back. I have vomited a time or two but I know it was from eating too fast. I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing. I am 3 months post-op and can eat almost anything I have tried. The only thing I couldn't tolerate was roast beef. Steak is fine as is beef stew - but for some reason, roast beef makes me feel really bad -so I don't eat it. I don't eat foods with refined sugar (I don't want them) but I do eat fresh fruit and vegetables with no problems. So, no, not everyone has problems. It really is an individual thing.

Hello Pam I had no problems, I weighed 387 lbs before surgery on Aug.14, 2001. Now I'm down to 245 and toning down. I did develope a hernia, but it was repaired and this is the best I have felt in 20 years. Stick with your diet, exercise, aand take your vitamins. If you follow your PCP staffs advice you will be okay. I also found a chewable mutivitamin thaat I tolerate, Centrum Chewables(orange flavored)and for my proteins I take Proteinex(2 tablespoons 3 times a day) works real great. You can go to your local Wal-mart and request that they order it, or call 1-866-595-5598, for more information aand a free sample. May God Bless you. Brother Martin Gray ([email protected])

My DH and I pretty much sailed through everything. I can still throw up if I don't chew. And there are things I can't tolerate(like the bacon I had yesterdy. We cannot believe how uneventfull this whole experience was.

My surgery went great. open rny 2 1/2 weeks post op. No vomitting or nausea. I dump on milk and that is a little disapointing. My incision is just fine and I am moving around great. I do feel a little exhausted but what can you expect. I am having trouble with the food transition. My body isn't hungry but my mind wants a Krispy Kreme Donut, that is the major thing I am dealing with right now! Good Luck!

Four of us in our family have now had lap RNY, and each of us have had picture-perfect experiences.....no surgical problems, 2 day hospitalizations, no external sutures/staples/drains or tubes, back to work in a week, no nausea or vomiting post-op. My daughter did develop lactose intolerance at 3 weeks post-op, which statistically happens in about 30% of RNY patients, and red meats make her feel uncomfortable after eating. I did not tolerate eggs for about a year without feeling as if I had a tennis ball lodged in my pouch, but that passed and now I tolerate them without any problem. We had great experiences and are now at goal....happier and healthier than we have been in years and years. I wish you the same good luck!

I am 4 weeks post-op and feel great! I have not experienced any ill side effects -- no nausea, vomitting, dumping, pain, etc. In fact, I didn't even use the pain meds in the hospital. Must be the 20+ years of a mega vitamin program prior to surgery, positive attitude, and all that walking. I was up and walking around the very next day after open surgery. I was ready to go home! Not too bad for someone who is 54. Went back to work in 2 weeks! I am so grateful that I have had a positive experience.

I had my surgery on July 9th, 2001. I went back to work the next week for 4 hours each day, the following week back full time. I had open RNY. I have been very lucky, I have had no problems of any kind. I followed the doctors orders to the limit, forced myself to eat 3 meals aday, even if I did not want anything. I have as of today lost 105 pounds. I think everyone is different, and I have had 4 past surgeries, so after the RNY, I forced myself to move constantly, until I was tired, and then I stopped. I think your frame of mind has alot to do with it also, if you make up your mind ahead of time you are going to get up and keep on trucking, you will, and you feel so much better, so much faster than if you just sit around and walk occasionaly. By moving you work out the soreness so much faster and the soreness is the hardest thing, or atleast it was for me, but as I said everyone is different, some people have a high tolerance to pain, and some have low levels of pain. Hope this helps.

I am one of those lucky women with labor. I breeze thru it and push a few times and out pops baby. The same is true with my open RNY. It has been a breeze!!! No problems at all!!! No depression. In fact, quite the opposite. I am so high on life right now. I feel as if I am floating. I can eat pretty much anything I want. Just in very small amounts. (No sugar of course) No nausia, unless I eat something high in sugar, then it is my own fault. This surgery has been the best thing I have ever done for myself. I am now 4 months post and down 65 pounds. I am 5'7" and started at 230. I am now 165 and fit into a size 14. They are even big on me but I have not had the courage to try a 12 yet. So to answer your question.....YES, there are people that have this surgery and breeze thru it with NO complications or side effects what-so-ever. I am living proof. :)

I had my open RNY on 12/10/01 and everything went and continues to go perfectly. This surgery has been a godsend and I wouldn't change a thing. I think most people have good experiences with their surgeries. Those having problems are just more likely to post about them here because they are seeking advice or just needing to vent to people they know care and understand.

I had a Lap RNY with Dr. Naaman (Houston) on August 29, 2001 and everything went according to plan...no complications, no nausea, no hernias, no fever, no pain, just soreness... I am just 6 months post op and down 104#!

I had a "textbook perfect" sugery. It took 2 hours and 10 minutes and I had hardly any bleeding. My incision looks like I'm 3 months out instead of only 6 weeks...it's healed that fast! I have thrown up 3 times, but two were because I tried raw veggies too soon and once because I ate too much. I didn't drink anything the first three days I was home from the hospital and I did have to go back for two day because of dehydration, but that was my fault. There has been nothing wrong with my surgery. :-) I did go in with almost no health problem and I am younger (22), so that might have something to do with it. Just think positive. I think, therefore I am. :-) Best of luck!

It seems like "everyone" has problems with stuff because they are the ones talking about it. If you don't have any problems, what's to talk about? LOL
I would consider myself a poster child for the lap RNY! I had no complications, have never thrown up, have no food intolerances except for the ones I am supposed to have (bread, refined sugars, and fried foods), and dump if I eat too much sugar (which keeps me honest). I reached my initial goal at 7 months and shot past it to lose another 15 pounds.
Now, don't get me wrong. The surgery hurts. My back hurt from lying on it for hours. I have had my share of nausea, too. And I have found out my tolerance levels the hard way--by testing them. BUT to me, that is all to be expected with this type of procedure. The only thing I wish I had done differently is measure from the start. I did go through the postop depression for a couple weeks but if I had been measuring instead of only using the scale I think even that would have been minimal.

You've had plenty of responses but thought I would chime in for the record. I am 3 months post op RNY (open) and I breezed through surgery with no complications. I was on pain meds for less than a week once I got home and was shopping by myself at Wal Mart 4 days after I came home. I have not dumped, only feel a little "sweet overload" if I have a little too much sugar, never thrown up or felt the need to. If it wasnt for the fact that I get full fast and have lost 70 lbs.in 3 months, I would wonder if they really did anything when they were in there.
