Dr. DeWitt is a fabulous surgeon!!! I was so very nervous to have my surgery, but he really put me at ease and made me comfortable. I have recommended him to alot of people I know, including my father who needs gall bladder surgery.
His staff is very friendly and makes you feel good about yourself. Judy is his head nurse and she's the greatest.
I don't really have any complaints about him but I haven't gotten his bill yet... :)
Anyone who is thinking about having this surgery should definately speak to Dr.DeWitt.
I was given a program to follow by the Nutritionalist and Dr. DeWitt is always available if I have any questions or problems.
He explained all the risks during and after the surgery and what could go wrong, but like I said he inspires confidence.
Both his surgical performance and his bedside manner were excellent.
I know that I haven't had anything negative to say... but so far I haven't experienced a truly negative effect from having Dr. DeWitt do my RNY.

I was very impressed with Dr DeWitt. He also has a great since of humor....but a serious side too. He said he did not foresee a problem doing the Lap procedure on me. He is also going to do another procedure on me. My Family has a history of blood clots. My Mother had one go to her Lung in January and two of her sisters have had the same problem. Dr DeWill explained to me that they have discovered that this is a genetic problem and it could very well happen to me. Before the does the Lap Gastric Bypass on me, he is going to go into the groin area of my legs and place titamium baskets in the arteries of my legs. This is to catch any clots that I might throw and it will allow the body to absorbe the clots back into the body. Dr DeWill seems to be on top of the new stuff that is coming out and by him recommending I have this done first, just shows me he is thinking of his patients and their wellbeing. In my book, he is the greatest !!

Dr. Dewitt is great. He was very informative and discussed all the risks involved. His staff is good. The only negative I have experienced is that I have had to wait nearly 2 hours on two occassions, which is difficult since I have a 1 1/2 hour drive to and from his office. I don't have to return to his office for another 3 months. My hospital stay was difficult. The staff was inefficient and I did not receive the care my doctor had ordered. I don't know what I would have done if my husband had not stayed with me. I understand that others have received excellent care at the same hospital. I guess it was just the particular staff assigned to me.

Dr. Dewitt and his staff were very friendly and informative and encouraging.

Dr. Dewitt has the best bedside manner of any physician I have met, and I work in the medical field so I have met quite a few. His office staff is also just as professional and friendly.

Dr. Dewitt is located in Birmingham, Alabama. His number is 205-502-4400. He went to UAB medical school and did his internship at Carraway Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama.

I have recommended him to several people. I have nothing but the highest confidence in him.

My first impression of Dr. DeWitt was he was very friendly and caring. He saw that I had a broken tooth that could possibly be the cause of a complication of surgery(imagine that) and insisted that I get it pulled. His nurse Judy seems like a nice person as well, although I wish my first letter went out faster than it did. When I called her over and over again she didn't seem to mind. And believe me I'll be calling even more if the insurance company doesn't get the letter soon. That'll be the real test. Dr DeWitt, was very informative and wanted to know all my questions and told me if I remember somrthing that I wanted to ask him just call and he'll answer over the phone. That made me feel good. I have been deriving a list of questions that I will ask upon my next visit.
I will update after surgery

Dr Dewitt is a wonderful man. He updated my husband 3 times via phone from the operating room on the progress of the surgery. I asked him to give me the prenatal chewable and he had no problem with that. He is a very positive man and he expressed how good I was doing. When I told him he did a great job himself, he told me."you had the hard part." So he is very humble. I feel Dr. Dewitt has proven to me that he is not in it for the money because he cancelled my appointment from June 11 because he knew he didn't have the appropriate support staff. He wanted to do this surgery the way he thought it should be done and I really appreciate him for that.
He could have just done it and moved on to the next patient. Dr Dewitt is a doctor that cares.

I have to agree with everyone else who posted comments-He takes time with you, answers all questions,is frank about the risks and benefits, has a great bedside manner, and is an all around great guy.My surgery had some serious complications(see my profile),but if I were to do it over I would still chose Dr.DeWitt-he pulled me through. Also the entire staff at Bessemer Carraway are good as gold.My mother was at UAB for some time and the nursing staff seemed overworked and unhappy. At Carraway I was in ICU for some time and a regular room while getting therapy, and without exception the nurses, therapists, and other staff were cheerful, attentive, and friendly.Anything I needed was handled quickly, unlike UAB.

Dr.Andrew Dewitt is a very pleasant person and I have meet a few Drs when I worked at the hospital. Dewitt explains the entire procedure and your options, Dewitt lets you decide the type of surgery. He has a wonderful nurse 'Judy' that see you as a person in need of help, and a human being. The staff as a whole are top rate in efficency.I think he should visit some of the support group meetings, because there are many questions that are asked and we can not answer more indepth. Especially because of his location , I did not know there was a WLS in Bessemer Carraway. At this time I can not say about the aftercare, Because when he mentioned I should stop smoking I think I when tone deaf.. But I will report back after pre-op visit. Dewitt went into details and provided a list of the complications and the risks involved in this as well as any surgery.I think he was very informative and also asked me questions about the support group meetings. With God in front, I think we will both go in fighting for my life. I think that both are important, because sometimes when a person walks into your room with a smile it makes you feel better, and I think he passes, But if I had to choose I would prefer a competent Doctor and my husband can sit on the bedside hold my hand and smile...

I was very impressed with Dr Dewitt even before I met him. He had performed surgery on my 87 yr old grandfather. And he is doing wonderful now. Dr. Dewitt has always been straight forward on everything I have asked him, like pain after the surgery, the risks, etc. The only time I did not like him was when I could not have ANYTHING to drink afterward and I thought he was just being mean. HA!HA!
Johnna at his office is wonderful, I call her all the time asking stupid questions and she answers every one of them and always tell me to call back if I need anything. He is really on my rear end now about walking and getting around. "The more you get up and move around the less sore you will be."I would rate Dr Dewitt as the best Doctor I have ever seen. And as all the other overweight people know, that is alot of Doctors.

I loved Dr Andy DeWitt! The Lord led him to me through a friend/co-worker. He was very patient, kind and caring. His staff was super. They have all been so sweet even though I probably drove them nuts with questions. He is a general surgeon, but has been trained on this surgery and does it often. He was very knowledgable and explained everything in detail about the surgery (good and bad). Am scheduled for surgery on the 29th of May! My first appointment with him was March 25th. Can you believe it! I give all the glory to God Almighty.

Am now postop 2 1/2 months. Have lost 34 1/2 lbs. Love Dr. DeWitt and his staff. He has a VERY structured aftercare. I highly recommend him for surgical competence and bedside manner. I have nothing negative to say about him or his staff. They are great!
